In 1966, in a dojo filled with watching black belts, Shigeru Oyama stepped forward to attempt something almost unthinkable: the 100-man kumite.

One hundred consecutive fights. No breaks. No mercy.

He didn’t stop at 100. He fought 121 rounds in a single day.

That test was designed to break even elite fighters. It became one of the defining feats in full-contact karate history.

Shigeru Oyama (1936–2016) was one of the top students of Kyokushin founder Masutatsu “Mas” Oyama. In that same pivotal year—1966—he was hand-picked to bring Kyokushin karate to the United States. He moved to New York City and spent the next fifty years building a powerful martial arts network across America.

In 1985, he founded World Oyama Karate, alongside his brother Yasuhiko Oyama, establishing an organization that would carry his standards of discipline, toughness, and technical precision around the world.

He was known for more than competition. Audiences watched in disbelief as he demonstrated what became known as the “Sword Catch”—stopping a live samurai blade between his palms at full speed. It wasn’t theatrics. It was timing, courage, and decades of training distilled into a single moment.

But perhaps his greatest legacy lives in the students he developed. He trained world-class champions and influential martial artists such as Joko Ninomiya and Willie Williams—fighters who went on to shape modern karate in their own right.

When he passed away on February 14, 2016, in New York, he left behind more than titles and ranks. He left behind a standard.

A 10th-degree black belt.
A pioneer of full-contact karate in America.
A teacher who proved that mastery is built round by round, rep by rep, year by year.

Legends are often loud.

Shigeru Oyama built his quietly—through discipline, endurance, and the willingness to stand in front of the next opponent, no matter how many had already come before.

The Kata Behind the 100-Man Kumite
When people hear the name Masutatsu Oyama, they think of knockdowns, bull fights, and the legendary 100-man kumite. But few talk about the quiet foundation behind that power — Tensho kata.
Tensho did not come from sport fighting. Its roots trace back to Okinawan Naha-te traditions, influenced by southern Chinese boxing. Through masters like Chojun Miyagi, breathing methods, circular hand motions, and internal tension training were preserved. Oyama absorbed these principles and carried them into the creation of Kyokushin.
While Kyokushin became famous for full-contact realism, Oyama never removed kata like Tensho. Why? Because he understood something many forget:
Power without breath control collapses.
Strength without structure fades.
Aggression without discipline destroys the fighter.
Tensho develops ibuki breathing, rooted stance, wrist conditioning, and controlled tension — the exact attributes that allowed Oyama to endure extreme combat challenges. The iron body was built on soft, circular foundations.
History shows us something powerful here:
The strongest knockdown karate in the world was not built on sparring alone — it was built on kata.
That is the side of Oyama many never see.
