Embracing Deaf Identity

As part of our hearing loss journeys feature, we would like to share this beautiful story about Fiona Murphy on how deaf pride helped her to come to terms with a daunting diagnosis, courtesy of The Drum by Ruby Cornish. More on this story, click on the link below.

For years, Fiona hid her disability — now she's unlearning her shame, with language and community.

This is a great project called Aural Diversity, It recognises that everybody hears "differently". This enables the listeners and the musicians to hear the music how "they" hear it. The musicians have a range of different hearing losses, also do some of the listeners. It is a very interesting and informative project.

Here at BHA Canberra we run a program called "Rediscovering Music" in association with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. It is a great program and it will be running again this year. It enables our members and people with a hearing loss to hear and interpret different music and instruments. This is a great opportunity for people who love and have heard music, to "re-love" it again with their hearing aids or cochlear implant. There are also opportunities for the listeners to ask questions about the music and the instruments.
The first session of the year is on March 31st, email: bhacanberra@gmail.com or message for more details.

A movie about the first ever Aural Diversity concert at the Old Barn, Kelston Roundhill, near Bath, on July 6th 2019.
