Michelle Moray - The Holistic Naturopath

Michelle Moray - The Holistic Naturopath I'm a Canberra based naturopath and holistic health practitioner. My main modalities include herbal medicine, nutrition and lifestyle advice.

I take a holistic approach to treatment, focusing on uncovering the underlying cause of any acute or chronic condition whilst providing targeted treatment tailored to each individual. What you can expect in your first consultation…
In your initial consultation, the presenting complaint will be examined first. You will be asked questions about the history of the complaint and what triggers the symptoms. A tongue and/or iris examination will be performed to gather further information. A review of all the bodily systems will be covered to gain a more in-depth understanding of your internal state of health, and uncover the underlying cause and any contributing factors. A review of your diet is also usually conducted. At the end of the consultation you will be provided with a treatment plan which includes herbal medicines and/or nutritional supplements along with any necessary dietary and lifestyle recommendations. Treatment outcomes and how soon results can be expected is also discussed. Depending on the chronicity of the presenting complaint/condition, follow-up consultations will be necessary to monitor progress and continue with treatment.

If you want to support liver detoxification you can’t go wrong with introducing more cruciferous veg (like brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, and kale) into your diet 🥦

Cruciferous vegetables have unique sulfur-containing compounds called glucosinolates (GLS).

When activated (through cutting, chewing, etc) these GLS will turn into biologically active derivates of isothiocyanates, and indoles (like sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol).

These derivatives can inhibit or activate phase I detox pathways and activate phase II pathways in the liver, leading to more successful elimination of toxins from the body.

Just a word of caution - if you have a sensitivity to FODMAPS or experiencing gut pain/bloating, cruciferous vegetables can worsen symptoms.

If you ignore the governement dietary guidelines you will THRIVE ⚡️⚡️

✅ Vegetable oils are NOT heart-healthy

✅ Cholesterol is NOT to be feared, and does NOT cause cardiovascular disease (inflammation does that)

✅ Both saturated fat and cholesterol are vital for our wellbeing and longevity

✅ Fibre is NOT essential - it is basically an anti-nutrient

✅ Cereals have 0% nutritive value, and definately should not be given to kids for breakfast

✅ Grass-fed red meat is NOT inflammatory (sugar, refined carbs, seed oils are!) and is one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat

✅ Salt is essential for proper physiological and cellular functions in our bodies (choose sea/lake salt rather than table salt)

So please, use butter, eat eggs to your heart’s content, salt you food, and choose fatty cuts of meat, esp beef and lamb 💪🏼

Photo above was my breakfast yesterday (not pictured, berries and cream)

Let’s get the facts straight 💅🏼

Just because period pain is common, doesn’t mean that you should suffer every month

A major cause of period pain is systemic inflammation🔥

At the start of your period, the uterus begins to release prostaglandins to stimulate the uterine muscles to contract in order to shed the lining. Prostaglandins are a normal part of the process but too many prostaglandins indicate inflammation. Some things to consider:

👉🏼 Do you consume a lot of refined carbohydrates, sugar, processed foods or seed oils. All these foods are highly inflammatory.

👉🏼 Are you sensitive to cow’s dairy? The problem is not the lactose or fat, rather it’s the protein A1 casein. A1 casein in some people can stimulate the immune system to generate inflammatory cytokines. You’ll know you’re sensitive if you experience hay fever, nasal congestion and recurrent sinus infections,
Goat’s or sheep’s milk products don’t cause this problem.

👉🏼 Do you have histamine intolerance?
Histamine intolerance is a condition of having too much of the inflammatory compound histamine. Histamine intolerance can cause, and worsen, period problems such as pain and pms symptoms like anxiety, acne, brain fog and headaches.

👉🏼 Do you have gut dysbiosis?
Having the wrong types of bacteria in your gut can mean your toxin load increases as they produces endotoxins called lipopolysaccharides (LPS). This activates your immune system to generate inflammation to deal with these bacterial overgrowths and pathogens.

👉🏼 Do you have endometriosis or adenomyosis? These are inflammatory conditions that are driven by immune dysregulation and hormonal imbalances (oestrogen dominance). The pain associated with these conditions is severe, sometimes even debilitating, with pain even occurring around ovulation and leading up to a period.

There are effective naturopathic treatments for period pain. Some of my favourite include magnesium glycinate, PEA, turmeric, concentrated fish oil and herbs that are warming, decongesting and antispasmodic to the pelvic area.

Consult with a naturopath to get to the root cause of your period problems and say adios to monthly period pain forever 👋🏼

Your adrenals are glands that produce hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline and catecholamines - which help the body cope with both short-term, and long-term stress.

However, with chronic stress, these hormones, especially cortisol, become dysregulated - becoming too high in the beginning (cortisol can be elevated for years), and then declining and ultimately crashing as you head towards adrenal burnout😩 Yikes!!

So how do you know if you're overworking your adrenals?

Look out for these signs 👇🏼

1. You start to develop a moon-face, or general puffiness
2. Fat accumulation around the belly - the classic apple shape 🙈
3. You start developing digestive problems
4. You're easily confused
5. You wake up tired / sluggish in the morning
6. You hit a wall between 2 & 4 pm - you feel tired, and seek out snacks /Tea/Coffee/Coke
7. Fall asleep in front of the TV / reading / computer(before bed)
8. You struggle to switch your mind off and fall asleep or wake throughout the night
9. You feel your heart racing a lot
10. You get sick often and it takes you a long time to recover

Have you been overworking and stressing your body (and adrenals) too much?

Start taking stock of how you feel on a daily basis and listen to what your body is trying to tell you!

Herb spotlight - Tinospora🌿

Tinospora cordifolia is a large climbing shrub found in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and China.

Tinospora is highly regarded as a rejuvenating tonic in Ayurvedic medicine, and is known as “Guduchi” which means ‘the one that protects the body’, and “Amrita” which means ‘divine nectar’. As such, it halts biological aging, enhances the body’s resistance, and increases longevity and strength.

Major actions include:
🌱 Adaptogenic
🌱 Tonic
🌱Immune-modulatory

Other actions include: antioxidant, hepatoprotective, hypoglycaemic, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, cytoprotective.

In clinic I like to use tinospora for those who are chronically stressed, ill or debilitated. Really effective for post-viral chronic fatigue, convalescence, recurrent infections and ongoing high stress with fatigue and low immunity.

This herb can also support cognitive function, healthy blood sugar metabolism and liver function.

I’m always in awe of what adaptogenic herbs can do 😍

If you've started to react to foods that were once fine, or finding you're becoming more sensitive to foods in general, then hit save and read on...

We know that chronic stress can affect digestion but did you know that persistent stress can also lead to developing food sensitivities ?

Several studies link stress (as mediated by elevated cortisol levels) with levels of secretory IgA in the gut.

Secretory IgA (sIgA) represents the first line of defence of the gastrointestinal mucosa and is vital to the normal function of the gut as an immune barrier.

As well as binding to invading microorganisms and toxins and entrapping them in the mucus
layer of the gut, secretory IgA also 'tags' food as acceptable.

So low sIgA leads to increased sensitivity to foods as your immune system starts to react to various food molecules and proteins it no longer recognises.

This ongoing immune activation and hyperactivity can damage the gut lining, leading to intestinal hyperpermeability (also known as leaky gut) which will lead to more food sensitivities.

If you've undergone periods of high stress and have started to become more intolerant to different foods, then it's worth considering doing some functional testing such as the GI Microbiome Mapping stool analysis which looks at Secretory IgA levels and work with a naturopath to address the effects of stress on your gut.

Winter calls for beef stews 😍 (Although I cook this year round as I’m a lover of stews)

Here I used: Beef bones + chuck steak + onion + carrot + pumpkin + salt + Italian seasoning and parsley

40 minutes in the pressure cooker 👍🏼

Nourishing and nutrient dense!

Remember: You don’t need to complicate things. Stick to whole foods, and prioritise animal proteins and it’s fats.

It can be extremely difficult navigating what is going on in the gut when you’re experiencing frequent and debilitating symptoms 😫🚽

You also have driving factors that initiated the problem and then exacerbating factors that worsen symptoms.

As you can see in this diagram, there are multiple overlapping symptoms between SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and IBS which makes it hard to work out what is going on and what is causing what, let alone get the appropriate treatment.

In some cases SIBO can cause IBS 😰

That’s where naturopathy works wonders. I focus on root cause medicine. I work on uncovering the underlying cause plus exacerbating factors through comprehensive health review and appropriate functional testing such as hydrogen breath test, comprehensive GI mapping, food sensitivity testing, etc.
Then I formulate a treatment plan that will address all of this and is unique to you!

Most doctors will only spend 10 minutes with you and tell you it’s IBS or give you a referral for a colonscopy, or just push medications like PPI’s - which is many cases (as told by clients) make their symptoms so much worse ‼️

Uncover the root cause/s and treat appropriately if you want to have complete resolution of your gut issues 😎
