Sooo why are we counting? Well it took 19 seconds to blink while reading an article on the computer…
A normal blink rate is around 15–20 times per minute, and when we’re using screens, it can drop to only 4–6 times per minute. So 19 seconds is much too long and can cause the eyes to dry out quickly!
Every blink spreads a fresh layer of tears across your eyes, keeping them hydrated, smooth, and protected. When you don’t blink enough, that tear film evaporates, leading to dryness, redness, irritation, and blurry vision. It can also cause long term problems with the tear production glands, causing chronic dry eye and the whole cycle continues!
Reduced blinking can contribute to digital eye strain, especially if you spend hours each day really concentrating on screens
Here’s how to protect your eyes:
👁️ Make a conscious effort to blink more often
💧 Use lubricating eye drops when needed
📵 Take regular screen breaks
👀 Have regular eye examinations, where we can offer treatments for dry eye, if indicated
