Encouraging your baby to turn their head toward their non-preferred side 👶

If your little one tends to always look the same way, these simple positioning changes can gently encourage more balanced movement throughout the day.

In this video we share 3 easy strategies you can start today:
1️⃣ Positioning toys on the non-preferred side

2️⃣ Adjusting sleep positioning (while always following safe sleep guidelines)

3️⃣ Switching sides during bottle feeds

Small, consistent changes can make a big difference over time — especially when started early.

If your baby has a strong head preference, reduced neck movement, or you’re noticing changes in head shape, a physiotherapy assessment can help guide you with personalised strategies.

Call us on (03) 9899 4004 to book in an appointment with one of our physiotherapists.

Worried about your little one’s head shape? Here’s what to expect at a physio session for flat/uneven head shapes 👶✨

1️⃣ Getting to know your baby
We start with a thorough subjective assessment – asking about pregnancy, birth history, development so far, and when you first noticed the head shape changes.

2️⃣ Head shape measurements
We gently measure your baby’s head to assess the severity of plagiocephaly. This helps guide treatment and track progress over time.

3️⃣ Neck & full body assessment
We assess your baby’s neck movement (to check for tightness such as torticollis), head preference, and complete a full body screen to rule out any associated concerns.

4️⃣ Personalised treatment plan
You’ll receive an individualised exercise and positioning program tailored to your baby – including practical strategies you can easily do at home.

Before you leave, your physio will guide you on how many sessions may be needed and what progress to expect.

If you’re concerned about your child’s head shape or neck movement, book an appointment and let’s support your little one together.

Flat head shapes are something we assess regularly in paediatric physiotherapy 👶

If you’ve noticed a flat spot, a head preference, or your baby tending to look one way, you’re not alone — these concerns are very common. An assessment can help clarify what’s happening and whether any support is needed.

In this post, we outline:
• The difference between plagiocephaly and brachycephaly
• Common contributing factors
• When a physiotherapy review may be helpful

Many cases respond well to simple positioning advice and targeted exercises when identified early.

If you’d like personalised guidance and reassurance, you’re very welcome to book an appointment — we’re here to support you and your little one 💛

Stepping Forward’s Aquatic Physiotherapy Intensive for Summer 2026 is now open for expressions of interest! 🤗

This is our most popular program of the year, and places are limited.

Aquatic Physiotherapy (previously known as hydrotherapy) is physiotherapy in water. The warmth of the water can help reduce spasticity, the buoyancy of the water makes movement and balance easier, the density of the water can be used as resistance to build strength and improve function. We use specific exercises that help your child to develop strength, balance, co-ordination, core stability and more. It may involve some activities similar to ones done in swimming lessons as water safety is a common theme.

Our Aquatic Physiotherapy program is popular as an introduction to water and water safety, helping children scaffold skills such as swimming, floating and submersion in water.

The program will be running over 4 mornings (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday), starting on the 12th January 2026.

Please contact your physiotherapist to discuss the benefits for your child, or contact our admin team on 9899 4004 or admin@steppingforward.com.au to enquire about availability and costs.

We look forward to seeing you in the water! 🏊‍♂️🌊
