⭐️ STAFF SPOTLIGHT! ⭐️

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be having a spotlight on some of our amazing team members so you can get to know them better.

Let's start with our fabulous speech pathologist, Julia. We asked her some questions.

1. Why did you choose to become a Speech Pathologist?
“I became a speech pathologist because I love that I can make a meaningful impact in the lives of children and their families. I like working together with children to achieve their communication goals, whilst having fun, and I enjoy building meaningful relationships with their parents.”

2. Where did you study?
“The University of Sydney.”

3. If you weren’t a Speech Pathologist, what would you be?
“A radiographer.”

4. What is your favourite toy/game in the clinic?
“Pop up pirate and the shopping list game.”

5. Are you a morning person/a night owl?
“A night owl, definitely.”

6. What is the craziest thing you have done?
“I lined up for a concert for over 15 hours to get a front row view of Harry Styles – totally worth it!”

You may have noticed that we’ve had two new faces around the clinic over the past few weeks – Pranita and Naomi! 👩‍🎓👩‍🎓

These two bubbly university students have been joining us at Speak, Learn & Grow by creating new and exciting activities, running sessions with clients, and learning what it’s like to be a clinical speech pathologist. Both Pranita and Naomi are at the end of their university degrees and hope to enter the profession next year.

If you see Pranita or Naomi around, be sure to say hello! 👋

This week (August 20-26th) is Speech Pathology Week, which is a week-long celebration of the speech pathology profession and the dedicated therapists. 🥳

Did you know that 1 in 7 Australians will experience a communication difficulty at some stage in their life? Whether it’s a tongue tie at birth, learning difficulties at school, or swallowing at an older age, speech pathologists can help treat a wide range of people.

The theme for SPW this year is “Communicating for life” and the aim is to highlight the vital role speech pathologists play in supporting quality of life across the lifespan.

This month, Sophie and Julia both completed their training to become certified in the Hanen Centre’s “It Takes Two to Talk” program.

This program is aimed at parents of children with a language delay, where parents can learn practical strategies to help their children learn language naturally throughout their day together.

When asked about the course, Julia said “I found it interesting how important it is to observe and wait for your child, and then to follow their lead to create interaction, engagement and communication. I learnt so many amazing strategies within the program.”

Sophie mentioned, ”I enjoyed being with other speechies who have different levels of experience and work in different contexts. I felt I learnt new principles I can use in my practice and plan on stepping back and letting parents become more involved.”

Congratulations, ladies!

Last week, we put on our bowling shoes and had our termly team building night! 🎱 It was a night full of games, food and laughs.

We love our team building sessions because we get to spend quality time together outside of work hours, get to learn new things about each other and strengthen our bond as a clinic. After all, team work makes the dream work. 🤩

Well done to Yvonne (receptionist/office admin) who took home the winning trophy! 🥳 (despite Elaria's efforts)

Do you have a child who is still in the initial stages of communicating? They might be able to say a few sounds, or perhaps a few words. So how can you encourage them to communicate even more? 🤔

1 Wait! 🛑

This will send them the message that you’re ready for them to respond and give them time to do so.

2 Model! 🗣

If you child doesn’t know the word, interpret their message and say it for them to help them learn the word.

3 Read! 📔

This creates a lot of opportunity for commenting and asking questions. Repetition of the same book will help them get lots of practice.

4 Ask!❓

Questions will open your child’s mind to new information and to help them learn the different types of questions and answers.

5 Tempt! 🤷‍♀️

A child who wants something is more likely to communicate with you, compared to a child who already has what they want.

If you have a young child that could benefit from more communication opportunities, give the above tips a go and let us know how you go.

Our top tip this week is to turn everyday household chores into opportunities for language!

Modelling language (aka demonstrating or providing examples) is the best way to help your child to learn, and then USE, new words.

So the next time you’re doing a chore, ask yourself, “What words can I model right now?”

Try to include a variety of words, including a mix of nouns (e.g. tshirt, broom, cup), verbs (e.g. wash, sweep, hang), opposites (e.g. wet-dry, clean-dirty), concepts (bigger, first, next), etc.

Doing chores is great because they are repetitive, meaning that you can model the words again and again and again!

A few of you might have noticed some extra pairs of hands around the clinic these past few weeks. We have had 2 students from a speech pathology masters course at UTS, Tara and Hassibe, join us.

Tara loves seeing children improve and tailoring sessions to the individual’s interests. 🚗 Hassibe’s favourite thing is to help children learn to read. 📖

We have loved having both of you around and wish you all the best with your final few weeks with us, as well as your future careers as speech pathologists! 🤩

Did you know that May is “Better Hearing and Speech” month every year? 📣

This week, let’s focus on language disorders. 👥

Some signs of a language disorder include:
● Does not babble (4-7 months)
● Makes only a few sounds or gestures, like pointing (7-12 months)
● Does not understand what others say (7-24 months)
● Says only a few words (12-18 months)
● Says words that are not easily understood (18-24 months)
● Has trouble playing with other children (2-3 years)
● Has trouble with early reading and writing skills (2.5-3 years)

Here is a blog we love because it has great ideas for games you can play to help your child’s language development.

10/05/2023

This Sunday, May the 14th, will be Apraxia Awareness Day for 2023!

What is Apraxia?

- Apraxia (or “Childhood Apraxia of Speech”) is a neurological disorder where a child knows what they want to say but their brain can’t coordinate the movements of their lips, tongue and jaw.
- This results in speech that is inconsistent and jumbled
- It is rare (less than 1% of children)
- The cause is mostly unknown
- It is a lifelong condition

What should you know about children diagnosed with Apraxia?

- Their language skills (saying what they want to say and also understanding what someone else is saying) are average
- Their only difficulty is planning the muscle movements for speech

Recognising Apraxia Awareness Day will hopefully help people be more aware of the condition which can result in earlier diagnosis (and therefore better therapy outcomes!)

Did you know that May is “Better Hearing and Speech” month every year? (And has been for over 50 years!)

During the first week, let’s focus on better hearing.

In Australia, three to six children in every thousand have some degree of hearing loss.

Some signs a child might be experiencing hearing loss:

● Does not alert to sound (birth – 3 months)
● Does not respond when you call their name (7–9 months)
● Does not follow simple directions (13–18 months)
● Shows delays in speech and language development (birth – 3 years)
● Has difficulty achieving academically, especially in reading and math

This Sunday (2nd April 2023) is World Autism Understanding Day. 🙌

Autism looks different on everyone! About 370,000 Australians are Autistic and each person has different strengths, interests, challenges and aspirations. 😸

Here are Speak Learn and Grow, we work with lots of autistic children and we tailor their therapy to their individual needs. 🗣️

There is no better way to celebrate this day than by becoming aware of some of the characteristics of Autism and how all of us can do better to increase our own understanding. 🫶

Celebrating Harmony Day and World Down Syndrome Day!

🧡Harmony Day is a celebration of inclusiveness, respect and belonging. Today our staff wore orange to celebrate Australia’s diversity and help spread awareness.

🧦 Our team is also rocking the campaign today for World Down Syndrome Day. The Lots of Socks campaign was created to help build awareness for the rights and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome. All you have to do is wear your most noticeable socks, whether they are mismatched or bright colours is up to you! The idea is to start a conversation, when people ask about your socks you can tell them “I’m wearing them to help raise awareness of Down Syndrome!”.

💻 To find out more, educate yourself, and others visit the Lots of Socks Campaign’s website https://lotsofsocks.worlddownsyndromeday.org

20/03/2023

Our book of the week is the “Seek-and-Find” Bananas in Pyjamas book because there are so many ways in which you can help your child learn using this book. Some learning opportunities include talking about:

Colours, such as “pink” and “dark green”. Constant exposure helps our children to pick up and start using more vocabulary.

📥 Prepositions, such as ‘on’, ‘in’, ‘behind’ and ‘next to’. When your child finds the object in the picture, you can talk about where it is, for example, “Yes, the boot is BEHIND the rock!”.

🌵 Concepts, such as location (near vs. far away), time (before vs. after), number (few vs. lots), quality (smelly, slimy) or social-emotional (excited, pleased). For example, “Yes, the spiky caterpillar is far away from the bird”.

These seek-and-find types of books are also great for children to practice scanning with their eyes and increasing their length of concentration. Enjoy!

Yesterday we celebrated International Women’s Day! 💐

International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements and contributions of incredible women internationally. This year’s theme of “Embracing Equity” highlights the importance of equity not only in opportunities, but in all areas of society.

Many women are playing a leading role in speech pathology across the globe. At Speak, Learn and Grow we are very fortunate to have so many brilliant, dedicated and compassionate women within our team.

We hope you were all able to celebrate the women in your life on this special day!

Here are 4 simple but effective ways to help your child to talk!

- Stress: Stress the key word in a sentence (e.g. put the car up?)
- Say Less: Reduce the amount of words you use (e.g. the big, red car is driving up the ramp! --> The car is driving up!)
- Show: Point to what you are talking about
- Go Slow: Talk slowly and pause before the important words

If you want to learn more about these and other helpful strategies, have a look at the Hanen website https://www.hanen.org/Helpful-Info/Parent-Tips.aspx

Toy of the Week 🛒📝🥕🍏📗🛍

The Shopping List game is a clinic favourite this month! A fun, motivating game you can also use at home to target a range of social, speech and language goals. Here are some tips:

🔹Language: Answering questions (e.g. What is on your list?), asking questions (e.g. Do you need the oranges?), learning grocery items (e.g. naming)
🔹Social: taking turns in play (e.g. my turn/your turn)
🔹Speech: ‘sh’ sound (e.g. I am shopping for the… apples!), ‘r’ blends (e.g. great grocery list, fresh groceries)
🔹Reading: reading the grocery list

We hope you enjoy the shopping list game as much as we do at the clinic!

Foundation spotlight 📣

The Frankie Foundation has a vision to support families who find their NDIS Budget not stretching far enough to support their child’s needs through the duration of their NDIS plan. Their goal is to offer families some support by awarding grants to pay for their child’s therapy, while awaiting new plans and budget approvals.

Book of the Week: Millie’s Marvellous Hat📗🎩

When a reader makes an inference, he or she is taking clues from the text and combining them with their own experiences or knowledge to draw a conclusion.

This book is great for practicing ‘reading between the lines’ and searching for clues to discuss:
♦Characters feelings and emotions
♦Answering predictability questions e.g. What will happen next?
♦ Character decisions e.g. Why did Millie go into the store?

Happy reading! 😃
