SCOLIOSIS is an abnormal curvature of the spine that curves in a “C” or “S” shape.
The curvature usually begins during adolescence, typically from around 10 years old onwards. Scoliosis affects both males & females; however, female are more likely to develop moderate or severe scoliosis. A family history of scoliosis may also increase the likelihood of developing the condition.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:
Common features in people with scoliosis include differences in shoulder, waist, or hip height, and one side of the rib cage or back appearing more prominent eg. one side of the shorts or pants may appear longer than the other when standing upright.
As scoliosis progresses, back pain and/or breathing difficulties may occur. Increased spinal curvature can compress the lungs, which may contribute to difficulty breathing in more severe cases.
The degree of scoliosis is determined by measuring the spinal curve (Cobb angle). This measurement is assessed using a spinal X-ray for diagnosis.

TREATMENT:
Conservative treatments are commonly used by healthcare professionals such as chiropractors and physiotherapists to manage and monitor patients with scoliosis. Regular monitoring is important for preventing progression and alleviating symptoms.

Treatment may include spinal adjustments or mobilization to help maintain mobility, muscle stretching, core muscle strengthening exercises and bracing (1).

Early evaluation can make a meaningful difference in addressing and managing the progression and symptoms from scoliosis. MORE THAN JUST BACK AND LEG PAIN

WHAT IS SCIATICA?
Dr Mehdi Jahanmiri (Chiropractor) states that sciatica is one of the most commonly misunderstood spinal conditions. Many people assume it’s simply “low back pain,” but sciatica actually refers to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve — the large nerve that travels from the lower back down into the leg.
It often presents as:
• Pain in the lower back
• Pain spreading into the buttock
• Shooting or burning pain down the leg
• Tingling, numbness, or sometimes weakness in the lower back or legs

WHAT CAUSES SCIATICA
The real question is: what is causing the nerve irritation?
Common contributing factors include:
✔ Lumbar disc bulging
✔ Spinal or pelvic joint dysfunction
✔ Muscle tightness (especially deep hip muscles)
✔ Prolonged sitting
✔ Poor lifting technique

Proper assessment for sciatica should focus on function — how the spine, pelvis and hips move, how the nerves respond, and how the muscles support the body.
Scientific clinical research recommends conservative care — including manual therapy ( such as Chiropractic or Physiotherapy), exercise, and patient education for low back and leg pain like sciatica.
Early assessment and structured care often lead to better relief and stronger outcomes and may reduce the need for more invasive interventions.

If you are experiencing pain travelling down your leg, numbness, or ongoing lower back discomfort call Dr Mehdi ( Chiropractor) for a thorough assessment now and find out how he can help relieve your sciatica.
