This year we donated to a number of different organizations and projects. We trialled the Re-usery to run sustainability workshops; donated to Castlemaine Field Naturalists, Castlemaine Pride, Landcare Victoria, Connecting Country, the Upcycling Award, Mount Alexander Sustainability Group, Remote Op Shop Project, Castlemaine Community Investment Co-operative and Empeli Designs.

Thank you to our volunteers who do all the work, and to everyone who donates and buys from us. We're just the middle (wo)man and we love working with all of you to make this happen.

Looking forward to 2026...

"While it can be tempting to go out and buy a brand-new summer wardrobe, it's worth remembering that more than 300,000 tonnes of clothing end up in landfill each year.

Australians, on average, purchase 56 new garments a year, yet they dispose of about 23 kilograms of clothing in the same period.

And while more work is being done in the recycled fibres space, it is still very small.

Less than 1 per cent of the global fibre market was from pre-and post-consumer recycled textiles in 2024, according to the Textile Exchange Materials Markets Report.

"Here in Australia, we have extremely limited fibre recycling capacity," Dr Van Amber said.

"So most of the recycling that is occurring is happening overseas."

What our clothes are made of can make a big difference when it comes to keeping cool, but not all fabrics are created equal. Here is what to look for — and avoid — during the warmer months.
