Last year two close friends were diagnosed with Osteoporosis. They were the last people I would have suspected of having poor bone density. Both were very active people, going to bootcamp, running and hiking, healthy diets and lifestyles and neither had symptoms.
Fortunately their doctors ordered bone density screening as part of a health check.
The good news is they both faced the challenge head on and with a combination of medication and simple tweaks to diet and exercise they have increased their bone density by 6 and 10 percent in only one year.
Healthy Bones Australia have recently updated their website and I would urge everyone to take a look at healthybonesaustralia.org.au. You will find factsheets and an easy to use risk calculator, advice about Calcium and Vitamin D and specific exercise guidelines which can be implemented yourself or under the guidance of a Physiotherapist.
Osteoporosis is a chronic disease affecting over 1.2 million Australians and leading to over 173,000 broken bones each year.
