HANKA - Hunter and Northern Kidney Association

HANKA - Hunter and Northern Kidney Association We meet at the Wansey Dialysis Centre at 7pm on the second Tuesday of every month, except January. Renal failure means that the kidneys stop working.

An organisation of patients and supporters dedicated to improving the lifestyle of those suffering from kidney failure and kidney disease in the Hunter and Northern NSW region. The Hunter and Northern Kidney Association was created in 1982 by a handful of volunteers in response to the needs of the growing number of people with kidney failure in the Hunter Valley and northern New South Wales. Kidneys are two small but vital organs whose job is to
* Remove waste products and excess fluid from blood as urine
* Keep body chemicals and hormones in balance, essential for good blood pressure
* Help in the production of red blood cells and formation of healthy bones. Kidney disease is a 'Silent Killer' which has no warnings, and very few symptoms. It effects one in three Australians.

* We can lose 90% function before even feeling sick
* More than one Australian dies with kidney related disease every 30 minutes
* On average 50 Australians die of kidney failure each day

Since 1982 HANKA has provided over $1,000,000 to help hundreds of requests for assistance. We provided all funding to build HANKA House, where patients and carers can stay at a very low rate when vising hospital for training or appointments. We help support patients and families dialysing at home when required with such things as...

* Blood pressure machines
* Weight scales
* Home dialysis chairs

Helping patients and the broader community:

* Electronically controlled dialysis chairs (over $5,000 each)
* A life-saving plasmapherisis machine
* Hospital equipment to improve quality of life (refrigerators, toasters, DVDs, ice machines, TVs)
* Haemoglobin blood testing machines
* Furnishing, maintenance and extensions to HANKA House
* Vascular access monitor
* Information support for patient care
• Simulation training equipment (over $9,000)

Chloe came to HANKA many years ago when she was 17 after she realised the plasmapheresis machine she needed for treatment was past its use-by date. She had also required haemodialysis, so she had a lot of sympathy with dialysis patients. Fortunately her symptoms at that time resolved, but she knew it could all happen again. With her help, and Craig Bagnall’s ability with filling out forms and lobbying politicians, and then Andrew Cornwell’s support as the new Liberal candidate for Charlestown, we got that new plasmapheresis machine, plus a new RO unit for the Wansey Dialysis Centre. For Chloe to even think of pursuing that at a time she had just been through diagnosis and treatment for a life-altering condition was incredible. It showed character and determination you don’t see every day.

From Doctor, Doctor to PatientYou know Chloe Bayliss from her role as Hayley in Channel Nine’s Doctor Doctor, but our favourite role of Chloe’s is the one in which she proudly acts as a Lifeblood ambassador. Today I had the pleasure of meeting Graham McGuinness (on the left) and Marco Rossignoli (in the middle) from Newcastle Pinball Association (https://www.facebook.com/NewcastlePinballAssociation/). The Association restores pinball machines to their former glory, so they can live a new life of entertaining new generations. Towards the end of each year NPA has a “Pinfest” (https://pinfest.com.au) where the general public can play an array of their restored pinball machines. They donate the funds raised to local charities, and three times they’ve chosen HANKA. Today they presented HANKA with a cheque for $3,000! What a great Christmas present! 🙂 On behalf of HANKA and all kidney patients in the Hunter and Northern NSW areas, here’s a very big “Thank You!!”

Good info and links for PKD, but lots that’s useful for kidney problems generally, and some that’s helpful with any chronic condition.

Be aware. Be informed. Your Kidneys will thank you.
