This one's for the Dad's out there ✨️

I asked my hubby to answear some questions I'd written out about birth and parenting...
And well, his responses had me all glass eyed 🥹

I love doing life with this guy 💗

Send this to your partners or Dad friends who might appreciate his words 💖

1️⃣ It works best when you start early.
Don’t wait until contractions are intense — TENS is most effective when started in early labour, helping to build your body’s natural pain relief response from the beginning.

2️⃣ You’re in control.
You can adjust the intensity and use the boost button during contractions, giving you a sense of control when things start to ramp up.

3️⃣ It’s completely drug-free.
No medications, no side effects for you or your baby — just your body working with a little extra support.

4️⃣ It won’t take the sensations away completely.
Let’s be real — labour is still labour. But many women find it takes the edge off enough to stay calm and focused.

5️⃣ It can help you stay home longer.
Using a TENS machine in early labour can make those first hours more manageable, helping you feel more comfortable and confident before heading into hospital/calling your midwives to come to you in the case of a homebirth.

✨ It’s a simple tool — but when you know how and when to use it, it can make a big difference.

Want to feel more prepared for birth (without overwhelm)? This is exactly the kind of practical, evidence-based support we dive into in Calmbirth 🤍

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 🤍

You only do this for the first time… once.

One first surge of contractions.
One first moment of wondering, “Is this it?”.
One first time meeting your baby.
One first moment of becoming a mother.

And while every birth is unique…
your first birth is the one that shapes so much of how you see yourself. That sets the foundation of parenthood.

It’s where you begin to understand your strength.

It's where you find your power.
It’s where your beliefs about your body are either built up… or broken down.
It’s where you learn whether you feel supported, heard, and safe.

Not because everything has to be “perfect” —
but because how you feel during your birth matters.

How you’re prepared matters.
How you’re supported matters.
How you’re spoken to matters.

You don’t get to control every outcome…
but you do get to choose how you prepare.

And that preparation can change everything.

Because when you understand what’s happening in your body, when you have tools to work with any birth and when your partner knows how to support you…

everything shifts.

So if this is your first baby — don’t just hope for a positive birth experience.
Prepare for one.

If you’re wanting calm, confident, supported birth preparation, I’d love to guide you. ❤️

Fear in Birth Is Usually Fear of the Unknown

Most fear in birth isn't necessarily about the pain...it's about the uncertainty.

What if you understood what your body was doing?
What if contractions weren't scary - but purposeful?
What if you knew how to work with them?
What if your partner felt rock solid in knowing how to support you?
What if you knew how to work with the setting you are choosing to birth in?
What if you were able to create a magical experience, no matter how it all unfolds? ✨️

Education changes everything.
Understanding turns fear into feeling empowered.

Join me for Calmbirth, so you can walk into your birth knowing you've got this. 👊

2 spaces left for March 21st & 28th.

10 ᴛʜɪɴɢꜱ ɴᴏ-ᴏɴᴇ ᴛᴇʟʟꜱ ʏᴏᴜ ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ʟᴀʙᴏᴜʀ

Labour often is not what we see in the movies. It's raw, messy, powerful, emotional, intense and deeply instinctive.

The more you understand about what's normal, the less scary it can all feel.

Here's 10 things no-one tells you about :

1, Labour often starts slowly. Despite what you see on the hollywood screen, the reality is that labour can last hours (often a day or more) and begins with mild, irregular contractions.

2. Contractions have breaks. People often imagine constant pain - I know as a teen, I did! But contractions come in waves with rest periods in between.

3. You might shake or vomit. The hormones released in labour can cause:
-shaking or trembling.
- nausea or vomiting.

4. You may make sounds you didn't expect. Groaning, moaning, humming, low toned primal sounds are really normal and help the body to relax and open up.

5. Labour is often very instinctive. Many women feel a strong urge to move around, rock, sway, lean forward, being guided by their body.

6. You might doubt yourself. Rhea Dempsey talks about these "crisis of confidence" that almost all women experience as some point in time in their labour (often towards the end). They are so normal. This is where your birth team plays a huge role in supporting you through these.

7. Pushing can feel relieving. Women can enjoy that feeling of actively working with their body whilst pushing their baby down. It's productive.

8. Your focus may turn inward. That beautiful cocktail of hormones you release when surrendering to the sensations allows you to tap into your subconscious mind and you go off into "labour land".

9. There are neurological changes occurring in your brain. These start in pregnancy and are enhanced by that beautiful cocktail of hormones - priming the maternal brain to become protective and nurturing over baby once it's born.

10. The moment after birth can feel surreal. Those first moments with baby after birth can feel quiet, emotional and almost dream-like as you get to know one another.

𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬

I encourage my Calmbirth couples to start having conversations with their caregivers about their preferences for pregnancy, birth and postpartum as early as possible.

This allows the establishment of rapport, development of trust, and open dialogue. It allows you to become familiar with the preferences and policies of your caregiver/place of birth, they become aware of your wishes, and this hopefully means there are less unknowns in labour.
*And in the off-chance you discover your values around birth are completely misaligned, you have time to pivot and change your path.*

My top questions to start conversations around are:
▪️ What is your policy around induction of labour for postdates?
▪️What is your policy around induction for pre-labour rupture of membranes?
▪️Do you require an admission CTG in labour if I am low risk?
▪️Do you routinely screen for GBS?
▪️Do you offer water birth or water immersion for pain relief?
▪️What is your policy on delayed cord clamping?
▪️How confident are you in supporting a physiological third stage in a low risk labour?
▪️What is your policy on skin to skin contact in theatre?
▪️For VBAC Mama's: what is your policy on VBAC?
▪️What is your policy around advanced maternal age?
▪️What is your policy around increased BMI?

It's not rocket science to realise which of these states would benefit a woman in labour.

The relaxation response physiologically supports the body to labour efficiently and effectively.

During Calmbirth:
➡️ we compare both bodily states and discuss the benefits of the relaxation response relating it to labour and birth.
➡️ you'll have a number of opportunities to practice going into this state.
➡️ you're then given relaxations to listen to post course, to not only create subconscious mind change around birth but to also embody this state. The aim is that it becomes so familiar to you...

That when labour commences you're able to move into this state more easily vs. going into fight or flight.

I don't know about you...but I love reading and listening to birth stories! When I was pregnant, I took great comfort from reading about other's positive births. Maybe that was because they weren't so readily available on social media back then? I hunted for birth books and couldn't get enough of them.

I would love to use this platform to share more positive birth stories from my past Calmbirth clients. If you're out there 🧐 and have one to share, please get in touch with me ✨️

How did your birth unfold?
What made it positive?
What worked well?
What tools did you draw on?
What would you have done differently?
What did your birth teach you?

There's a real power in storytelling. In gaining wisdom from those who have done something before us. I'm sure just like me, there are many couples out there, that would love to read about your insights and reflections whilst they prepare to welcome their little one into this world ❤️
