If we want our teens to open up, there are some really helpful things we can remember.
1. We think we get it, but we dont. Yes we have been teenagers, but we navigated a very different childhood to our kids. Avoid going into what it was like for you and saying "I know what thats like" because we really dont.
2. Listen. Really listen. Let your teen talk more than you. Let there be silences.
3. Get curious. Ask questions rather than giving advice. Advice giving can feel like criticism or being told what to do (which no one really likes). Allow them to find their own solution and be ok with them not knowing just yet.
4. Avoid lecturing. Connect through an interest of theirs or practice conversations in places your teen feels most comfortable.
