2026 marks the Year of the Fire Horse in the Lunar Calendar. At Better Place Cheltenham, we celebrated with a delicious dumpling feast.

Lunar New Year is celebrated in many Asian cultures, including in China, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. These diasporas have been a crucial fixture of Australian culture since the early 19th Century, and we appreciate the sharing of their customs and traditions.

On this day in 2008, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd stood in Parliament House and gave a formal apology to the Stolen Generation on behalf of the country.

This marked an important moment in Australia's history. By acknowledging Australia's complicity in horrific practices of colonisation, Rudd took the first step towards addressing pillars of systemic racism that affect our Indigenous community to this day.

Now, eighteen years later, there is still a lot of work to do.

And we're back!

Better Pride went to the Midsumma Pride March, where we got to walk in solidarity with thousands of of fellow members of the LGBTQI+ community. Thank you to everyone who said hi! We look forward to seeing you next year.

But that's not all! At the carnival, we asked two questions at our stall. Last time, we posted the answers to one of them. Here, we're also posting all of the best relationship advice we got.

We asked the wonderful people at the Midsumma Carnival for their response to two questions. The first one; What do you love about Rainbow Families?

Today, the day after the Midsumma carnival, we have a simple message for a large group of people.

Thank you to the many beautiful people that braved the relentless heat and attended our booth throughout the day.

Whether it was to ask about our services and learn about how we support the LGBTQIA+ community.

Whether it was to give us some pearls of wisdom for our white board (be it relationship advice, or what you love about being in a rainbow family).

Whether it was to say hi and pick up a wristband.

Or even if it was just because those little plush sperms caught your eye.

Thank you for giving us yet another opportunity to connect with and learn from the community. We have a lot in store for Better Pride in 2026, and we can't wait to bring you all along for the ride.

(And, of course, a massive thank you to our many volunteers who helped make the day run as smoothly as possible)

There wasn't a dry eye in the room as Mataio Brown, activist and co-founder of She Is Not Your Rehab () delivered an emotional and thoughtful keynote about the importance of community and culture in breaking cycles of violence and generational trauma, followed by an informative Q&A.

We would love to thank everybody who attended, as well as , and the City of Wyndham for hosting such an incredible event.

Additionally, both the CEOs of Relationship Matters and Better Place Australia announced that both organisations are starting a co-location partnership; an initiative that will make the services of both more accessible and effective for those that need them.

Overall, today was a major success, and we look forward to seeing where it leads.
