Have you heard of laparoscopy surgery? Sounds scary, especially if you don't know much about it. Here is some information on what it is along with what to expect before and after surgery. A laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) can be used in the diagnosis or treatment of a number of conditions of the abdomen and pelvis such as endometriosis. Endometriosis can be removed surgically (excision) or be treated by destroying the cells using diathermy (ablation).
Laparoscopic surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, you will be asleep during the procedure. Your doctor will provide specific instructions on how to prepare before surgery. Typically, you will be instructed not to eat or drink for several hours (often 6-8 hours) before surgery.
After surgey it is normal to experience mild to moderate discomfort, shoulder pain from gas, and fatigue. These symptoms will gradually improve daily and can be managed with prescribed or OTC meds.
