Menstrual mood swings can have you begging to be sedated like poor Christina. Throughout your menstrual cycle, your body goes through hormonal fluctuations of estragon and progesterone as well as chemical changes of serotonin that affect brain chemicals, influencing mood changes. These fluctuations may become more intense the week leading up to a period and is known as a condition called premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Symptoms include irritability, anxiety, sadness and confusion.
PMS is generally manageable with certain lifestyle changes such as stress management, maintaining a balanced and healthy diet and exercise. Although, in some more severe cases, these symptoms can be more intense and cause significant emotional and physical distress. This is a condition called PMDD. There is no specific test to diagnose this condition, although tracking your symptoms can help you and your health care professional understand your body better.
If you experience symptoms that impact your emotional, physical, behavioural or cognitive ability, you're not alone, talk to your doctor about possible treatment options that work for you.
