This week, St Vincent’s Private Hospitals Brisbane and Northside proudly presented certificates to the graduate nurses from the February 2025 intake.

Designed to support the transition from student to registered nurse, the 12-month graduate program combines hands-on experience with structured support, helping our nurses build confidence and develop essential clinical skills in a real hospital environment.

Graduates heard from fellow peers Jess, a ward nurse with 6-month rotations in 1B and 1C at Northside, and Aaron, a perioperative nurse graduate who did 6-month rotations in endoscopy and the cardiac catheter laboratory.

Both shared thoughtful insights into their journey, speaking with enthusiasm as they step into the next chapter of their careers. As Jess beautifully said:

"Today marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of exciting another—one we’ve worked incredibly hard at, where sometimes fear overtook but passion got us through,” said Jess. “Finishing our graduate year has shown that earning our Bachelor of Nursing is more than earning a qualification; it’s a commitment to care, compassion, and lifelong learning to serve the wider community. “

Congratulations nurse graduates, St Vincent’s is thrilled to have you on our team as we continue to provide better and fairer care, always!

After an incredible career and 23 years with St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, Julie is starting her well-earned retirement.

Initially joining us as a casual RN in late 2002, Julie soon went on to become a CN in 1A. With the development of the facility in 2009 leading to the reconfiguration of the first floor and the opening of 1C in 2011, Julie then became the NUM of what is now 1B. Leading her team with love, care and fierce determination, Julie has made an enormous contribution to the fabric of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside.

Thank you, Julie, for your dedication, expertise and lasting impact. You leave behind a legacy of compassion and care for patients and staff alike. We wish you all the best for what’s ahead!

Today is Close the Gap Day, a time for us to reflect upon the gap in education, employment, health and life expectancy between our First Nations People and other Australians.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples still live, on average, 10-11 years less than non-Indigenous Australians.*

The Close the Gap Campaign was launched in April 2007 by patrons Catherine Freeman OAM and Ian Thorpe OAM in response to Professor Tom Calma’s Social Justice Report (2005) which challenged governments to bring about health equality within a generation.

At St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane and Northside, we recognise our responsibility in closing the gap in healthcare and believe when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a genuine say in the design and delivery of healthcare, policies, programs and services; better life outcomes are achieved.
