Today is World Cancer Day—an international day dedicated to raising awareness, encouraging prevention, and mobilising action to address the global cancer epidemic.

As cancer rates continue to rise across Australia, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside and Brisbane remain committed to working collaboratively with our community to strengthen diagnostic, referral, and treatment pathways. Through education initiatives such as our 2024 Oncology Symposium and the upcoming Icon Cancer Centre - Australia opening at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, we aim to enhance patient outcomes and support better care.

The World Cancer Day 2026 theme, United by Unique, places people at the centre of care and highlights the importance of personalised approaches in making a meaningful difference. We encourage everyone to stay diligent in spreading awareness and supporting early detection across our community.

We’re entering an exciting new chapter at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, partnering with Icon Cancer Centre - Australia as development takes shape on our new multi-million-dollar, on-site radiation therapy service.

Last Wednesday, Oli Steele, State CEO, St Vincent’s Queensland Private Hospitals, and Sheree Todoreskov, General Manager & Director of Clinical Services, Northside, were joined on site by Icon Radiation Oncologists Dr Michelle Grogan, Prof Jim Jackson, Dr Minjae Lah, Dr Dominic Lunn, and Prof Mark Pinkham to witness the progress of construction.

Icon is Australia’s largest dedicated cancer care provider, with a highly experienced multidisciplinary team and the latest radiation therapy technology. The centre will deliver first-class care, giving cancer patients the choice to receive all treatments—from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation—on one hospital campus.

We look forward to opening this full service later this year as we take another significant step in providing better and fairer care, always.

At St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside, we always appreciate the feedback we receive from our patients and visitors. Here are some kind comments left to our wonderful team recently.

“The nurses were wonderful, and I received great care. My room was great and I was very impressed with being able to order meals which were delivered in a timely manner by friendly staff.”

“I was extremely well looked after by doctors and nursing staff. Everyone was friendly, patient and kind. The food service was excellent.”

“I was greeted by well trained, polite and friendly staff. I always found the hospital to be well maintained with a welcoming atmosphere. It is my preferred hospital for private care.”

“I have been a patient of St Vincent’s for many years and have been pleased with the quality of service from specialists. Whenever I have been admitted for procedures I am confident of the standard of care I will receive.”

Here at St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside we strive to provide better and fairer care, always. Thank you to our non-clinical teams, nurses, allied health and doctors alike and congratulations on this well-deserved praise.

Meet Sonia, a Senior Radiographer at St Vincents Private Hospital Northside, and recipient of the 2025 St Vincent’s Health Australia Queensland Employee of the year award!

Sonia has been a valued member of the Cardiac Catheter Lab team for 19 years. As a senior Radiographer, she works alongside our Cardiologists, Cardiac and Vascular Surgeons and Interventional Radiologists, to provide intra procedural imaging.

She works closely with fellow radiographers and nursing staff to ensure the smooth running of our procedures, troubleshooting equipment issues and provides equipment servicing. As the Radiation Safety Officer, Sonia ensures the lowest radiation doses are delivered to patients, while maintaining good image quality, and educates staff on how to reduce their risk of exposure.

Sonia enjoys the challenge of critical thinking for complex percutaneous coronary interventional procedures as well as the case support she provides for structural heart procedures – especially Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantations (TAVI).

“I love the opportunity to learn at conferences about what is coming to our workplace and how we can improve the service we deliver to our patients. Sharing knowledge and insight with colleagues and students helps deepen our understanding of what we do,” says Sonia. “I encourage others to have pride in their work and challenge the idea of how things could be done better. With this in mind, we are always improving and driving growth and success. Lead by example and always remember – there is no ‘I’ in ‘team’.”

Thank you, Sonia, for your dedication and commitment to your team and patients. Your care, skill and kindness are appreciated by everyone at our hospital.

Wishing all in our St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane and Northside community a happy and prosperous New Year.

This Christmas season, we had the opportunity to celebrate the incredible work of our volunteer team!

Throughout 2025, our team of volunteers at St Vincent's Private Hospitals Northside and Brisbane have worked tirelessly to enhance hospital services, patient experiences and spread positivity and kindness within our walls.

During the month of December, we held our annual volunteer Christmas lunches at both sites. It was a lovely opportunity to celebrate our volunteers and socialise as a large group. A great time was had by all!

St Vincent’s Private Hospitals Northside and Brisbane would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers for their marvellous work and generosity of time throughout the year.

We have been moved by the generosity of our teams at St Vincent’s Private Hospitals Brisbane and Northside, who have been collecting food, toys and goods over the past few weeks, to donate to those in need this Christmas.

Thanks to their efforts, we have been able to provide five hampers and gifts for families, clothes and toiletries for the homeless, food items for people seeking refuge and asylum, families experiencing domestic and family violence and raise donations for The Sisters of Charity Downs and West Community for Farmers.

Thank you to John and Allan from the St Vincent de Paul Wavell Conference who came to pick up the five hampers and gifts!

We have no doubt that each of these gifts will be received with immense gratitude. Thank you to each one of our incredible communities for your support this Christmas.

This Christmas, St Vincent’s nurses across Australia are being recognised in a special and meaningful way.

🎄 Christmas with Delta will shine a national spotlight on the compassion, skill and dedication of St Vincent’s nurses — including those caring for patients at St Vincent’s Private Hospitals Northside and Brisbane.

We were proud to see SVPHN Cancer Care Coordinator Ita McCarthy and former oncology patient and current volunteer Giovanni Porter featured as part of the broadcast. Together, they represented St Vincent’s with warmth, professionalism and generosity, and captured the very best of the Queensland spirit as they shared our story on a national stage.

The program highlights St Vincent’s growing national partnership with the Delta Goodrem Foundation and shares powerful stories from nurses and patients, reflecting the care, dignity and presence our nurses bring to people when they need it most.

This national recognition is closely linked to the Hearts of Gold Christmas Appeal, led by St Vincent’s Foundation Queensland, which is supporting the nursing excellence program for our St Vincent’s nurses in Brisbane and Toowoomba – offering specialist training, leadership development and professional growth — strengthening patient care across Queensland.

Philanthropic support plays a vital role in ensuring our nurses are supported to thrive — at Christmas time and into the future.
