International Women’s Day 2026 💜

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate and empower the women who make what we do at St Vincent’s possible.

From the Sisters of Charity, who laid the foundations of our organisation 169 years ago, to the thousands of women leading, researching, and providing care everyday across our hospitals.

This year’s theme, Give to Gain, encourages a mindset of generosity and collaboration, by emphasising the power of reciprocity and support.

Contributing to women's advancement helps create a more supportive and interconnected world. Women make up 75% of our 30,000-strong workforce, and their leadership and expertise shape our organisation and the care we provide every day.

When we invest in women, we create stronger, more inclusive workplaces and deliver better and fairer care, always.

World Obesity Day: Weight loss drugs on the rise but no ‘silver bullet’

Today is World Obesity Day, a unified day of action calling for a cohesive, cross-sector response to the global obesity crisis.

Obesity is a complex, chronic disease and a major driver of conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

At St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside, bariatric surgeon Dr George Hopkins highlights the sharp rise in the use of weight-loss drugs, and why these medications, while helpful for some, are not a long-term 'silver bullet.'

He explains that many patients experience side effects, financial strain, or only modest weight loss, prompting them to explore more sustainable options such as bariatric surgery, combined with lifestyle and metabolic care.

On this World Obesity Day, we’re encouraging Australians to understand the realities of obesity treatment and the importance of evidence-based, long-term support.

Beginning of Year Mass & Cuddle Bed Blessing

Staff, volunteers and community supporters from across St Vincent’s Aged Care and Hospitals gathered last night in the Giovanni Chapel at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane for the Beginning of Year Mass celebrated by Archbishop Shane Mackinlay alongside chaplains, Fr Rodel, Fr Stephen and Fr Seamus.

The Mass offered a blessing over the health care work of all St Vincent’s staff and volunteers for the year ahead.

It was a special time for the St Vincent’s community and a privilege to welcome Prof. Michael Drew and Gary Humphrys from the Mary Akinhead Ministries, as well as Chris Blake, CEO of St Vincent’s Health Australia, and Chris Jacobs-Vandegeer, Mission Leader. We were blessed to be joined by Sisters of Charity, Sr Clare Nolan rsc and Deirdre Hickey rsc.

Following the Mass, Archbishop Shane led a private blessing of St Vincent’s first cuddle bed and family suite in the palliative care ward. He was joined by Mrs Lauren O’Mahony who worked closely with St Vincent’s Foundation Queensland to raise funds in memory of her husband Don O’Mahony who passed away from brain cancer in 2024, age 41yrs.

Lauren’s two young sons supported the fundraising efforts through their school and kindy communities.

Cuddle beds are a symbol of comfort, closeness and dignity for patients and families. They allow families to stay physically close to their loved one during end-of-life care.

By creating space for a partner, child or family member to lie beside the patient, cuddle beds provide comfort, reduce anxiety, and support meaningful connection in the moments when closeness matters most.

Meet Donna, our Clinical Documentation Specialist at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside!

A valued member of the St Vincent’s family for seven years, Donna began her journey working in the ICU before joining the Quality and Risk team in 2022.

No two days are the same in Donna’s role. She works closely with doctors to continually improve documentation standards and best practice across the hospital.

Donna loves being a problem solver, collaborating with her fantastic team, building strong relationships with doctors and their admin teams, and seeing the real-world impact of quality improvements.

“In this fast-paced and ever-changing world of healthcare, accurate and timely clinical documentation is critical for quality care and patient safety. It shouldn’t be seen as a burden, but as a clinical tool - when we invest in improving it, everyone benefits.”

Thank you, Donna, for your passion, expertise and dedication - helping us to provide better and fairer care, always.

Creating World-Class Health Services for Queensland

It was great for St Vincent's Health Australia to hear firsthand from Queensland Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, the Hon. Tim Nicholls MP, at the Queensland Media Club yesterday outlining the vision for creating a world-class health service for Queensland.

We welcomed insights from Queensland Health in responding to the challenge of its 'Build-and-Fill strategy' - to 'build' more infrastructure and 'fill' it with a world class health workforce.

A growing and ageing population in Queensland is putting all hospitals and healthcare services under pressure.

St Vincent's Health Australia stands ready to support Queensland Health in any way it can to deliver on this vision and provide Queenslanders with the best healthcare.

St Vincent's. Better and fairer care, always.
