A note from the heart about why these markets matter
Hi beautiful humans,
I’ve been sitting with this for a while, because I don’t want this message to come across as pressure, blame, or “someone is wrong.” That isn’t where I’m coming from.
I’m writing because I care deeply about what we’re building together, and I believe it matters far beyond a single market day, a single stall, or a single takings sheet.
Yes, we all need to survive. Yes, we all need to make sales. That is real, and I honour it. But I also think there’s something bigger at stake here.
More and more, we are living in a world that pulls people away from one another. Convenience has become king, and in a lot of ways, we’ve been taught to prioritise ease, speed, and individual gain over community, connection, and circulating wealth amongst one another. Little by little, that way of living erodes the very things that hold us up when life gets hard.
To me, markets are not just about buying and selling.
They are about community. They are about shared visibility. They are about creating places where real people can meet real people. They are about keeping money moving through local hands, local families, local dreams. They are about protecting spaces where small business, creativity, courage, and human connection still get to breathe.
I know there can sometimes be conversation around scarcity — around not wanting too many markets, too many stalls, too much overlap, too much competition. I understand where that comes from. When things feel tight, it’s natural to look at how we protect our own patch.
But I want to gently offer another perspective.
That way of thinking, while understandable, can also keep us small. It can keep us separate. And separation is exactly what weakens community.
Because the truth is, when we stop thinking only in terms of “How do I protect mine?” and begin asking “How do we strengthen ours?”, something shifts.
A stronger market culture helps all of us. A stronger community helps all of us. More connection helps all of us. More reasons for people to gather, stay local, and support one another helps all of us.
If we keep drifting with the current of convenience, disconnection, and centralised control, we may one day look around and realise the spaces we took for granted are gone. The little places. The local faces. The grassroots opportunities. The freedom to show up, set up, connect, and create something real.
It feels to me a bit like we’re in a river that’s moving faster than people realise. The current looks normal because we’ve been in it so long. But up ahead, the drop gets steeper. And if we just keep floating without question, many small businesses, families, and community spaces will get pulled where they never wanted to go.
So maybe this is the moment to pull in at the riverbank. To pause. To look around. To reconnect with one another. To remember that community is not built by accident — it is built by participation, loyalty, courage, and care.
That is why I do markets.
Not just to fill stalls. Not just to create an event. But to help build a living, breathing ecosystem where people support people, where wealth circulates through community, and where we remember that cash in local hands still matters, relationships still matter, and showing up for one another still matters.
I’m passionate about creating more opportunities for that, not fewer.
And I want to say thank you.
Thank you for backing local. Thank you for having the courage to put yourself out there. Thank you for being part of something more meaningful than a transaction. Thank you for helping keep community alive in a world that is constantly trying to make everything smaller, faster, and less human.
My hope is that we continue to stand together, support one another, and see the bigger picture of what’s really being built here.
Because when community thrives, we all have a better chance.
Love and Above,
Dave
