Broken arm? At Melbourne Hand Rehab we offer waterproof casting!💧

Waterproof casts are a light weight and waterproof alternative to traditional plaster casts. They are generally more comfortable and easier to deal with, and you can swim (but not in sandy beaches) and shower whilst wearing them.

Waterproof casts can be a great option for children and the elderly. Aside from being lighter and waterproof, they are also healthier for the skin.

All Melbourne Hand Rehab clinics have the resources to make customised waterproof casts, however they are not suitable for all injuries.

During your appointment your hand therapy practitioner will check that your injury is suitable for a waterproof cast.

Work Habits That Hurt Your Hands☝️

Sore or tired hands after work?
You might be making these 3 common mistakes:
1. Poor posture
2. Tight grip
3. No breaks

Slide 1 - Poor posture:
✅ Keep wrists straight + shoulders relaxed + use lumbar support on chair
(Left image – what you should do)
🚫 Poor posture = hand & wrist strain (Right image – what people tend to do)

Typing with bent wrists and rounded shoulders increases tension from your
shoulders to your fingertips. Keep elbows at 90°, wrists neutral, and screen
at eye level to avoid strain on your hands 💻

TIP: Using a wrist rest with your keyboard can help with neutral wrist
positioning – use a rolled-up towel (like in the photo) for a cheap
alternative!

Slide 2 - Tight pen grip:
✅Relax your grip/use an ergonomic grip (left image – what you should do)
🚫 Tight grip = tendon stress (right image – what people tend to do)

Squeezing a tool too tight for prolonged periods can hurt your hands as there
will be extra stress on the tendons being used. Sometimes we forget to
loosen up as we’re focused on a task! 🖋️

Try padded or thicker handles which are more ergonomic, and keep your grip
nice and relaxed as much as possible 🖱️

Slide 3 - No breaks
✅Breaks every hour, incorporating movement and stretches (top image –
wrist stretches, what you should do)
🚫 Repetition without breaks = tension + strain = damage to muscles, nerves,
tendons (bottom image – what people tend to do)

Constant repetitive movements (e.g. typing or clicking on your mouse)
without rest causes strain on your muscles, nerves, and tendons. Take small
breaks every hour and incorporate movement and stretches to reduce the
risk of injury to your hands 👋

TIP: Some simple stretches and movements include: wrist stretches in both
extension and flexion (wrist extension stretch as pictured in the right image),
wrist circles, opening and closing fists ✊

27/10/2025

A radial gutter splint is a type of hand splint designed to support and protect injuries on the thumb side of the hand, specifically the index and middle fingers or the second and third metacarpal bones 🤚

It’s commonly used for stable or nondisplaced fractures of these fingers or their corresponding metacarpals 👈

When applied, the hand is placed in what’s known as the position of safe immobilization (POSI). In this position, the wrist is slightly extended (20–30°), the knuckles (MCP joints) are bent (70–90°), and the finger joints (IP joints) are kept neutral. This posture helps keep the hand comfortable, prevents stiffness, and promotes proper healing 🌟
