It’s National Diabetes Feet Day! Today Sole Wellness Podiatry is contributing towards a national conversation to improve the outcomes for those living with diabetes-related foot disease.
There's almost 2m Australians (about 5.5% of the population) living with all types of diabetes, and up to 500k people living with silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Over 300 people in Australia are diagnosed with diabetes every day.
According to Diabetes Australia -
🦶More than 4,400 amputations are performed every year in Australia as a result of diabetes.
🦶 Every year there are around 10,000 hospital admissions in Australia for diabetes-related foot ulcers.
🦶 Diabetes-related foot disease (which includes foot ulcers and amputations) costs Australia around AUD $875 million per year.
🦶85% of diabetes-related amputations are estimated to be preventable if foot wounds are detected early and managed appropriately.
And here’s the kicker…
People living in regional and remote parts of Australia are up to 11 times more likely to have toes or feet amputated as a result of diabetes compared to people in affluent metropolitan areas.
