The trapezius muscle is a large muscle that extends from the bottom of your head down to the middle of your back, as well as out to each shoulder. It has three sections, upper, middle and lower fibers. The traps play an important role in maintaining good posture, as well as moving your shoulders, lifting your arms out to the side, shrugging and pulling your shoulders back.

The Levator Scapula muscle is also one of the tight muscles involved in Upper Crossed syndrome. The muscle works in several different ways, it helps to bring the shoulder blade up, and it also participates in moving the neck to bend sideways and rotate. When the levator scapula is tight you may feel pain or tension when rotating your head or bending your head to the side, as well as some shoulder tension.

This is a great stretch to relieve tension in the Levator Scapula muscle. I love this stretch!

Pectoral Muscles!
The pectoral muscles are some of the tight muscles involved in Upper Crossed syndrome. The pectoral muscles help to pull your arm across your body, as well as working with the rotator cuff to rotate your arm. When tight, it will appear that your shoulders are being pulled forward. Stretching your pectoral muscles will greatly improve your posture and reduce pain and tension.

This week I am shining a spotlight on poor upper body posture. Your job could be a major contributing factor in poor posture, do you get headaches, feel stiffness and tension in your neck and shoulders?
There is a name for this, Upper Crossed Syndrome, which is simply explained as a cross section of tight muscles and weak muscles, creating in imbalance, which in turn creates pain and tension.
