In this webinar, brought to you by CPSN and Mycpguide you will hear what a team of researchers discovered about responding to ableism.

What is Ableism?
Ableism is when people with disabilities and or other similar conditions are
treated as less than, excluded, or underestimated in what they can do in life.

It can look like:
Assuming someone needs to be “fixed”
Believing a person can’t do something because of how they look
A lack of accessible spaces or services

Ableism isn’t always obvious.

Calling someone “inspirational” or feeling pity because of their disability can feel
patronising and infantilising, even if it’s meant kindly.

Comments like “you don’t look disabled”, “you’re so brave,” or “I don’t know how
you go out” are also forms of ableism. These everyday remarks can be hurtful and, over time, exhausting.

Former CPSN Board member and past president, Dr Cadeyrn Gaskin has published an important research paper around ableism and how adults with CP
confront and cope with everyday ableism.

Together with Mycpguide, CPSN is proud to co-host this live and FREE webinar discussion panel that delves deeper into some of these important definitions and topics. Register your interest to join us on Wednesday April 29 at https://zpr.io/qvt3k86f6eKD

Last month, CPSN participated in VALID’s ‘Having A Say’ conference in Geelong. CPSN’s Marketing officer Josh interviewed CPSN client Michelle and her support worker, Cindy about life transitions.

Michelle and Cindy reflected on Michelle’s journey following an acquired brain injury nearly 20 years ago, from being told she would remain in a vegetative state to rebuilding a meaningful life in the community.

Today, Michelle lives independently in her own home, runs an arts business with her sister, and is a public speaker. They shared the often unseen work behind this independence, including skill-building over time, thoughtful prompting, and designing supports that truly fit the person.

It was a powerful discussion capturing dignity, courage and great support in practice. For the CPSN team, it is a genuine privilege to support Michelle with flexible supports that align with her goals as her life evolves.

March 16 - 20th marked Neurodiversity Celebration Week.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week raises global awareness about the importance of acceptance, equality, and inclusion for neurodivergent people in schools, workplaces, and communities.

Neurodiversity is a broad term that recognises the natural variations in how people’s brains develop and function. It describes the different ways individuals process information, communicate, and experience the world.

These differences can include, but are not limited to:
• ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
• ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)
• Dyscalculia
• Dyslexia
• Dyspraxia
• Dysgraphia
• Tourette Syndrome

Too often, these traits are viewed through a negative lens. Instead, it’s important to recognise the many strengths commonly associated with neurodivergent thinking, such as:

• Strong focus and task completion
• Contribution to team and workplace diversity
• High attention to detail and enjoyment of repetitive or structured tasks
• Creativity, innovation, and strong problem‑solving skills
• Loyalty to employers and lower staff turnover
