If you are doing a First Aid course in Australia for it to be a legitimate course you need to practice the mouth to mouth CPR breaths.

The Australian Resuscitation Council is very clear on this requirement:

You will see at the top of page 2 of their guidelines:

“At a minimum, mouth to mouth rescue breathing must be taught and assessed (in conjunction with the learning objectives outlined above), in any training program.”

If you are doing a first aid course and the trainer advices you do not need to do the breaths, then insist on doing them so your certificate is valid.

In real life you have a choice to do the breaths or if you are unwilling or unable, then to do compressions only.

However in a course it is a requirement.
