Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week is this week 1-7 September.

The theme is ‘unpacking the why’.

The ‘why’ is complex. Without understanding all the reasons ‘why’, we miss the bigger picture when it comes to eating ‘disorders’.

Some additional layers we need to consider when it comes to supporting neurodivergent children & teens in their nutrition journey, include:
- Trauma, cPTSD
- Sensory Processing Differences
- Food access, security and safety
- Gender dysphoria, access to affirming care
- Drive for autonomy and control (PDA), OCD
- Diet culture, Stigma, ableism

Without knowing someone’s story, giving labels such as “fussy” or “lazy” can potentially be hurtful and harmful. These words and comments imply they have control over what is happening.

What should come first?
Affirming language, safety, keeping things simple where needed and remembering that each journey is unique.

What things have you heard that have impacted yours or your child’s journey with food?

Like or share if it resonates.

If we try to support a child or teen with their nutrition without really understanding them and their feeding differences, we are offering a bandaid solution.

For more information about PFD and ARFID here are a few pages to check out:

Also note: I use the word “disorder” as it forms these titles, however this word is pathologising and leads to stigma around these diagnoses as being something “wrong”. I’d prefer to call them differences.

Please note too: information here is educational and does not substitute individualised medical advice. Please see your health provider for further information as it relates to you or your child.

Non-speaking does not mean less.
Not everyone has access to speak but this doesn’t mean they can’t communicate in different ways. This also doesn’t mean they don’t want friends.

I am grateful for these chances to educate my own kids and help them understand that different doesn’t mean less.

We are constantly striving to do the best for our kids and the definition of “the best” means striving for things that are not realistic or accessible to our kids.

What if we shifted our expectations?

“My child doesn’t eat when hungry as recognising hunger is not easy for them” …or perhaps they have PFD or ARFID

“My child does not eat certain foods as they have sensory processing differences which make it tricky” ….or the environment is challenging

“My child is feels a sense of safety and regulated when a screens are present for meal times”

Let’s shift our expectations of what’s best for our kids.... When their stress response isn’t activated around food, it is seen as less of a threat.

What foods do you notice cause less of this response for your child?

Hit like if you relate or share with someone who may need this 🫶

Criteria, BMI ‘in range’, ‘typical’ body shape….

Something these things have in common, is they can lead people to think their symptoms or experiences “aren’t that bad” or “body is not small enough” or “BMI is good and in range” or “bingeing or vomiting occasionally”.

This can lead us to believe that we (or our kids) are not worthy of treatment or support now.

I’m here to say:
Just because your child doesn’t meet the criteria, or their BMI is over the range, or their body shape isn’t what you might associate with an eating disorder. It doesn’t mean that your thoughts and their experience is not real, valid, important and worthy.

Eating disorders can exist in any BMI, any body shape and even if they don’t meet expected criteria… it could manifest over time.

Your child is always worthy of support, validation and treatment. Reach out to a trusted and affirming health professional, early.

Like if you agree or share with someone needing to hear this.
