Recovering from injury can sometimes be a slow and challenging process, both mentally and physically.

We know it can be tempting to dive right back in, but here are some important things to consider first.

1) Have you completed your rehab?
Rehabilitation exercises prescribed by physios serve specific purposes with the intent to help your body recover as soon as possible. The more you follow your rehab plan, the easier your return to sport is likely to be. Often you will slowly or partially return to your sport or activity before you have fully completed your rehab, your physio will help guide this process.

2) Are you actually ready?
Preparedness for sport isn’t just about feeling good when standing or walking. It’s also about ensuring that your body can do the things that is required in your particular sport or activity. For example, some sports require particular demands, such as jumping, tackling, changing directions, power etc. Your physio will prescribe exercises specific to the demands of your activity to help you return back to what you love doing.

3) Are you prepared to listen to your body?
As you return to your sport, take the time to listen to your body before, during and afterwards. If you are feeling any discomfort, apprehension, pain and/or have any questions about your injury, ensure you let your physio know.

Chat to your physio to discuss the best return-to-sport plan for you.

The first step to anything is preparation, and sport is no exception! But when it comes to warming up, it can be hard to know what to do.

The key is in the phrase warm-up. You want to get your body moving, and warm up those muscles to help reduce the risk of injury.

To do this, focus on movement. You want to get your blood pumping and elevate your heartrate gradually. Think skipping, speed walking, jogging (it can be on the spot) or anything else that gets you moving.

You can then follow this with more high-intensity exercises, and additional movements that activate specific muscle groups, such as your core, glutes or quads.

Don’t overthink it!

· Heel or arch pain
· Burning or aching feet during, or at the end of the day
· Blisters or pressure areas
· Pain that reduces as soon as you take your shoes off.

If you’ve never seen a physio before, you’re not alone!

Telling someone exactly what we do can be tricky because we work across so many different areas to help our patients. We also often work closely with other allied health professionals to ensure each patient is getting the best care for their condition.

So what do physios do? A lot! Have a read of this blog to discover more: https://bit.ly/495di6K

Pain is a topic we talk about often with our patients, and it can sometimes be difficult to know what pain is normal and what needs attention.

For example, it is common to feel some discomfort after increasing activity or trying something new. However, pain that lingers, worsens over time, or starts to interfere with your day-to-day activities may be a sign that something else is going on.

You know your body best. Paying attention to how it feels and how it responds to movement is important, especially if something doesn’t feel quite right.

As physiotherapists, our role is to help identify factors contributing to the experience of pain and support you to keep moving safely and confidently. If you have concerns or ongoing discomfort, we are here to help and guide you.
