Do you know the difference between acute pain and persistent pain?

Acute pain lasts less than 6 weeks and is linked to a specific injury. On the other hand, persistent pain lasts more than 12 weeks.

Persistent pain can be more complex and often reflects changes in the sensitivity of the nervous system. If you’re living with pain, a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist may be able to assist. Contact our friendly team today to find out more.

Did you know that around 90% of lower back pain cases are “non-specific”?

This is a term used in research to highlight that most cases of lower back pain and cannot be attributed to a specific underlying condition e.g., a fracture, infection or major nerve compression.

For those of us with lower back pain, it means there could be a range of complex interactions between tissues, movement, nervous system sensitivity, and psychosocial factors that could be contributing to your pain.

For more info, have a read of our recent blog post about lower back pain. Source: Maher, C., Underwood, M., & Buchbinder, R. (2017). Non-specific low back pain.

Whether you’re making your grand comeback to sport from off-season or injury, here are some simple tips to follow to ensure you stay injury free.

Tip 1: Warm up every time. Warming up your body and activating muscle groups helps to reduce risk of injury.

Tip 2: Hydrate and fuel your body. Getting enough water, food and sleep are all factors that contribute to your performance - both on the court or field, and when recovering afterwards.

Tip 3: Pay attention to what you are feeling in your body. If something doesn’t feel right or is causing discomfort, seek advice. Your physiotherapist can step you through your return to sport/activity plan.

If you need any assistance, we’re always here to help so that you can enjoy the activity you love. Enjoy the season!
