Our Pharmacists have been discussing the issue of chickenpox (Varicella) immunisation and feel there is a lack of clarity around the requirements for immunisation.

The national immunisation program (NIP) provides one dose of chickenpox vaccine at 18 months of age, but the immunisation guidelines state that two doses are recommended for lasting immunity in all children < 14 years of age. It appears that most parents are unaware of this and possibly have not been advised as the assumption is that all necessary doses are provided by the NIP.

Unfortunately, this does mean an out-of-pocket cost to parents who wish to fully immunise their children.

For children under the age of 5 years, a prescription would be required from a doctor.
