Many learning struggles that teachers attribute to attention problems, motivation issues, or cognitive limitations might actually stem from an undiagnosed visual dysfunction.

When educators begin recommending vision assessment before tutoring referrals, they help families target interventions more effectively.

Vision assessment deserves consideration as a first step rather than a last resort when children struggle academically despite adequate instruction and effort.

One-size-fits-all approaches don't work well in optometry. Some patients need glasses alone, others need vision therapy, some benefit from colorimetry or neurological tinting intervention, and many require combinations of treatments.

Eye care solutions should be tailored to each person's specific visual symptoms, and functional needs rather than following standardised protocols that don’t account for individual circumstances.

Our personalised approach involves thorough assessment, professional experience, and commitment to recommending what actually helps rather than what's easiest to provide.

Every few years, someone comes in asking about vision therapy for themselves after spending years thinking it was only for children. The surprise on their faces when they learn adults can absolutely benefit from vision training is genuine.

Vision Therapy treats adults with binocular vision dysfunction problems such as convergence insufficiency or strabismus and amblyopoia, post-concussion vision syndrome, eye strain from screen work, and various other visual efficiency problems. The principles are the same regardless of age, training visual skills to function more effectively.

The misconception that vision therapy is paediatric-only prevents many adults from accessing treatment that could significantly improve their daily comfort.

Night driving anxiety is incredibly common, and it's not always about needing a stronger prescription. Glare sensitivity, reduced contrast sensitivity, and difficulty with rapid light-to-dark adaptation all affect nighttime driving comfort and safety.

Specialised lens coatings, anti-reflective treatments, and sometimes specific tints can reduce glare and improve contrast for night driving. The solution requires proper assessment to identify what's actually causing the problem.

When night driving becomes stressful or you find yourself avoiding evening trips, investigating the visual component makes sense before assuming it's just aging or nervousness.

Reach out to optometry@cooroy for night vision assessment.

Here's what can happen: someone gets new glasses, wears them for a week, and decides they "just can't get used to them." The glasses get abandoned in a drawer, and the person goes back to their old prescription or struggles without correction.

Sometimes adaptation takes time. Sometimes the prescription needs adjustment. Sometimes the frame fit needs adjusting. And sometimes the issue wasn't actually corrected because the initial assessment didn't identify the real problem.

Quality eyewear products paired with thorough follow-up make the difference between glasses that work and glasses that gather dust.

Sunglasses aren't just accessories for sunny days. UV protection matters year-round because ultraviolet radiation exposure accumulates over a lifetime, contributing to cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium and other eye health issues.

Quality sun protection means lenses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, not just dark tinted lenses that look protective but don't actually filter harmful radiation. Polarisation further reduces glare, which matters for driving and water activities and any outdoor activities in our harsh Queensland climate.

Eye care solutions should include proper sun protection as standard preventive care, not optional luxury.

Standard eye chart tests measure whether someone can see clearly at a distance, but they don't assess how eyes and brain work together during reading and learning tasks.

Behavioural vision assessment examines the complete visual system including eye movements, focusing ability, eye teaming, and how visual information gets processed.

Some people have perfectly clear vision but still experience significant focusing difficulties because their visual skills aren't functioning efficiently.
That's exactly where specialised behavioural vision assessment makes a real difference.

People often don't realise they need reading glasses until they're holding books at arm's length and squinting at restaurant menus in dim lighting. That gradual accommodation loss called presbyopia affects everyone eventually, typically becoming noticeable in the mid-40s.

Rather than straining to see small print, borrowing your partner’s glasses or avoiding reading altogether, proper reading correction makes close work comfortable again. Progressive lenses, dedicated reading glasses, or computer-specific lenses each serve different needs depending on your lifestyle and visual demands.

Fighting inevitable age-related changes with squinting and avoidance is exhausting. But, accepting appropriate correction is liberating.
