‘Children are so charming because they’re like adults before life ruins them’- I once joked with a client.

Of course it was said in jest, no one is ‘ruined’ - but there is an efflorescence to young children’s effortless being in the moment that, as adults, many of us work to recapture.

I’ve spent a lot of time caring for and raising children, even before becoming a mother myself.

While studying, pursuing my music and between other ‘real’ jobs I worked as a nanny, looking after babies and children in their homes - a surrogate for the village we have ‘modernised’ out of our current way of life.

As small children we have two primary needs - attachment and authenticity.

Attachment to our primary carers ensures we are cared for, kept safe, nourished and nurtured.

Authenticity is our need to be who we are, express that and align it to what is meaningful and true to us.

Attachment is vital for survival as a tiny human totally dependent on our carers.

So we give up any part of our authenticity to make sure our attachment needs are met.

We become who they need us to be, to feel loved and accepted.

Now I am raising my own little human and have a nanny of my own.

My work is with adults and often brings me to sitting with the inner child of the clients I work with. Guiding them as they nurture the frightened or hidden parts of themselves back to safety, back to embodiment.

Part of the work of coming home to our authentic selves is piecing back together the parts of us stuck or suppressed in the childhood experiences that taught us to shrink to stay emotionally safe.

It’s stepping back into the past to collect and integrate those parts of our authentic self we gave up to get our attachment needs met so we can feel safe to be fully engaged in the present.

As we reconnect to our sense of wholeness and recognise we are worthy of being loved and accepted for who we are - not who we think we need to be, the armour that once kept us safe but now keeps us small, starts to drop off.

We get to experience connection all the way in.

To recapture that effortlessness we once expressed so naturally.

We learn to trust that we are safe to be our true selves in the world, and to allow deep love and connection from that space.

To come back to the full ALIVENESS that we were born into.

Going first when it comes to creating change, breaking cycles or simply doing things differently can be really damn scary.

It’s asks us to step into our courage, to shut down our primal urge to maintain the status quo of tribe.

But when we find that courage we start to align to our values and lead from the heart.

We no longer do what’s expected, but do as we’re called.

And the benefits ripple out from us, through our families, through our friends, through our community and beyond.

We ‘sing’ the seeds of change to life in those around us.

People have called me brave more times than I can count.

But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been scared as hell almost as many.

My beliefs, my desires, my calling hold me in my courage.

So I can feel the fear without succumbing to it.

So I can get to the other side of fear and reach the beauty, the joy - embrace the things most meaningful to me and shape my life around them.
