All of us at Advance Podiatry Group are deeply saddened and shocked by the sudden passing of Dr Michael Love of Redgum Medical Centre. Many of our team have worked alongside Michael for over 10 years and considered him an invaluable colleague whose knowledge, kindness and compassion touched so many. His passing is a tremendous loss to our Corowa-Rutherglen community.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Michael’s family and to the entire team at Redgum Medical Centre.
To allow our staff the opportunity to pay their respects and support our colleagues at Redgum Medical, we may need to make some appointment adjustments once funeral details are confirmed. We will contact any affected clients directly.
Thank you for your understanding and take care,
Emma Mirtschin

✨Congratulations Emma Baker! ✨

A huge congratulations to our wonderful colleague and Co-Director, Emma Baker, on earning her Endorsement for Scheduled Medicines this week!

Over the past three years, Emma has risen to the challenge of building a new business, raising two young children, teaching the next generation of podiatrists, and dedicating herself to achieving this qualification. She has really done it all! We’re so proud of you Emma, and can’t wait to see the positive impact this will have for Advance Podiatry, our community, and in your role as a lecturer at CSU.

A big cheers to you - your hard work has truly paid off, and it’s wonderful to celebrate this incredible achievement with you!

This Foot Health Week we are shining a light on little feet!

Children’s feet are still developing. In fact, not all bones in the foot are fully formed until around the age of 18, and therefore the arches, tendons and muscles are constantly changing as they grow. A few aches and pains may be normal, but persistent foot or leg pain is not!

Some of the more common causes of foot and leg pain in children include:
• Sever’s disease: pain in the heels caused by inflammation of the growth plate in active 8-14 year olds
• Osgood-Schlatter disease: pain at the front of the knee linked to growth and repetitive activity in 10-15 year olds
• Flat feet: Reduced or collapsing arch height causing fatigue, altered gait and discomfort in growing children
• Toe walking: persistent patterns may affect posture, balance and muscle development
• Overuse injuries: Tendon or bone stress from repetitive activity without appropriate support or recovery

At Advance Podiatry, we specialise in children’s foot development and early intervention. Assessing your child’s feet can prevent long-term issues and keep them active and pain-free!

✨ Congratulations Emma! ✨

We are incredibly proud to share that our Co Director, Emma Mirtschin, has officially gained her Endorsement for Scheduled Medicines (ESM) through the Podiatry Board of Australia.

This is a rare and highly challenging qualification - with over 6,000 podiatrists in Australia, only around 260 currently hold this endorsement. We are now the only private podiatry clinic in the region with an endorsed podiatrist on our team!

So what does this mean for our patients? With this advanced scope of practice, Emma is now qualified to prescribe and administer a range of medicines, including:
- Antibiotic and antifungal medications for skin and nail infections
- Corticosteroid injections for conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bursitis and joint pain
- Analgesics and anti-inflammatories to help manage acute and chronic pain
And much more!

This expanded prescribing capacity allows us to deliver faster, more comprehensive, and more convenient care - meaning our patients have access to a wider range of treatments managed directly within our clinics.

We’re beyond proud of Emma for this achievement and excited to bring this advanced level of podiatric care to our community!

Let’s talk about cracked heels!

Cracked heels (or heel fissures) are common, especially in the warmer months when we’re more likely to wear open shoes. Not only can they look unsightly, they can also become painful and lead to infections if left untreated.

What happens when heels crack?
• The outer layer of the skin is designed to be a protective barrier. On the heel, this layer often becomes thicker and drier because it’s under constant pressure and friction.
• When the skin loses moisture, it becomes less elastic. Instead of stretching, it starts to split under stress (for example, when walking or standing).
• The fat pad under the heel naturally expands when you stand. If the skin on the heel is too dry and stiff, it can’t accommodate that expansion → the rigid skin splits, forming cracks (fissures).
• If the fissures extend into the deeper layers of the skin, they can become painful and bleed. This also makes it easier for bacteria or fungus to enter → increasing the risk of infection.

What can cause cracked heels?
• Dry skin (often worsened by weather or open footwear)
• Standing for long periods of time on hard surfaces
• Being overweight (increases heel pressure)
• Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis
• Poor footwear choices (open-back / flat shoes)

Meet Emma Mirtschin – Co-Director and Principal Podiatrist at Advance Podiatry.

Emma graduated from Charles Sturt University in 2011 and has been working in the region ever since. As a Wodonga local, she is passionate about delivering high-quality, personalised care to our community and helping people stay healthy, active, and pain-free.

Emma has a strong clinical interest in podiatric medicine, particularly in managing clients with complex comorbidities that impact foot health. She is currently in the final stages of completing her Endorsement for Scheduled Medicines—a professional goal she has been dedicated to for the past three years. This additional qualification will expand her ability to provide comprehensive care and incorporate pharmacological treatment options into her scope of practice.

Outside of running a business and working in the clinic, Emma is a proud mum to three beautiful children and loves spending her days off with them. She leads an active lifestyle with regular BFT and reformer Pilates sessions, and in her (limited!) spare time, enjoys doing anything creative.

Consults are available with Emma at both our Wodonga and Corowa clinics! 👣

We provide personalised, high-quality podiatry treatment and are dedicated to improving and maintaining your foot health. Our podiatrists are skilled in diagnosing many conditions affecting your foot and ankle that can be the cause of foot pain. Call us for your next podiatry appointment or book onl...
