Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency worldwide, particularly among women of reproductive age, pregnant women, children, and those with certain medical conditions.
Being deficient in iron can cause a whole range of physical and cognitive effects, from behavioural and cognitive issues in children, impaired immunity and physical endurance, to low mood and energy levels.
Oral iron therapy is the first-line strategy for most people. Due to an iron regulatory hormone called hepcidin iron intake is tightly regulated which means that “more is not necessarily more” when it comes to iron. Large daily doses may not improve your iron status and may just cause gastrointestinal side effects such as constipation, bloating and nausea.
It is important to take the correct type, amount, and frequency of iron supplementation to avoid the “iron blocking effects” of hepcidin and the gastro intestinal side effects.
Even more importantly, it is critical to address the underlying cause of low iron.
If your iron is low, let me help you get to the root cause and effectively implement strategies to replete your iron.

Stress and diet impact our immune capacity, as do deficiencies in certain vitamins, minerals, protein and omega 3 fatty acids. Addressing these will help build a robust immune system.

If you've caught a nasty cold or flu, then check out the recipe below for a simple, soothing and refreshing tea. Not only will it soothe your throat, thin any mucus, boost your immune system but will also assist with any cold/flu aches and pains.

Juice and zest of 1 lemon
1 tsp good-quality honey (e.g. manuka)
1–2 cloves raw garlic, crushed
2 cm fresh ginger, grated or sliced
2–3 cloves, crushed
½ tsp fresh chilli, minced (optional)
Pinch of cayenne pepper

1. Pour 1-2 cups of boiling water over the ingredients.
2. Cover to retain volatile oils.
3. Drink once cooled a little.

Caution: may induce sweating or heat, which is part of the recovery process

Are you a worrier? Do you struggle with anxiety?
Worry and anxiety are a normal part of everyday life but can easily become problematic, affecting home life, work, and relationships.
Chronic or excessive worry and anxiety is known as General Anxiety Disorder (GAD). GAD is often undiagnosed and can impact your health and wellbeing by causing fatigue, restlessness, tension, sleep disturbances and irritability.
Did you know that diet, and some simple lifestyle changes can play a big part in helping to manage stress and anxiety?
Below are five tips to help manage stress and anxiety;
- 1. Calming breathing techniques; inhale slowly, hold your breath for a moment, then exhale for a longer period than your inhalation. This activates the vagus nerve which calms the nervous system.
- 2. Social connection with friends, family and even pets.
- 3. Taking time out; leave you phone in the car, lay on the beach or in a park without an agenda.
- 4. Doing something fun; laughter and fun lower stress hormones and stimulates the immune system.
5, Yoga, meditation, qi gong, massage and other such activities are also helpful.
There are many naturopathic remedies that are highly effective at calming and soothe a hypersensitised nervous system. They are non-additive, fasting acting and effective therapies.

Let’s talk about Coriander!
Coriander divides the nation, you either ‘love it or hate it’. If you are in the ‘love it’ camp, then I have good news for you.
The humble coriander plant is a bit of a superhero, well known for its ability to assist with the removal of heavy metals from our body.
We are exposed to heavy metals daily through the air we breathe, the food we eat, occupational exposure, household and beauty products, and more.
Feel like giving your body a hand to remove heavy metals? Then get friendly with coriander!
Below is a super simple and delicious recipe for coriander pesto. Perfect to use up coriander in the fridge, or any excess in your garden.
This pesto can be added to soups, spread on fish and meat, stirred through pasta, added to salads as a dressing and so much more.
If you are not a fan of coriander, I encourage you to try this recipe and give coriander a second chance. Your body will thank you.
DETOXIFYING CORIANDER PESTO
2 packed cups fresh coriander (leaves and stems)
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cups almonds, walnuts or pine nuts
1/3 cup (approximate) of lemon juice
1/2 cup olive oil
¼ tsp salt, pepper to season
Nutritional yeast (or parmesan) for topping
1. Place the coriander, garlic, almonds and lemon in a food processor. Blend but maintain some texture.
2. With the motor still running, gradually add the olive oil in a thin, steady stream until a smooth paste forms.
Ideally use immediately. Any leftover can be stored in an airtight container (covered with olive oil to prevent discolouration) or popped into an ice cube tray to freeze, then bagged so that it is ready for use as it's needed.
This recipe also works well with basil.
ENJOY!

Welcome to my page. I am so excited to help you with your health journey but first a little bit about me.

In the '90s I studied to be a naturopath, after working as an accountant for a decade. This feels like a very long time ago now, and for the last 20 years I have been embedded in all things health!

I opened my first practice in Nedlands, where I successfully supported clients to reclaim their health and vitality using diet, lifestyle and natural medicine. My passion for health using evidence based natural medicine has grown with my experience. My goal is to deliver excellence in naturopathic care.

Now I run two practices, one in Cowaramup (in with the Body & Spine team) and the other in North Fremantle. I also consult online. I support people with a wide range of health concerns including digestive health, hormonal health, mood and sleep disorders, kids’ health, immune health, cancer support and more.

I live in Cowaramup with my partner. When I'm is not in the clinic, you will find me swimming, gardening, doing yoga and Qigong, hiking, camping, travelling and spending time with my partner, family, friends and dog Bonnie.

Be sure to follow me as this page will be a place for me to share my knowledge and passion for natural medicine.

I look forward to posting delicious recipes, "did you knows", current natural medicine research, DIY remedies and more! I look forward to inspiring you with some fabulous, fun and informative natural health posts. 😀

If you would like to work with me, I offer in-person consultations in Cowaramup, North Fremantle, or online.
