✨ Melasma vs Freckles (Sun Damage): Why the difference matters! ✨
Nurse Maddy from Island Glow Aesthetics shares a quick explanation of melasma vs sun-induced freckles, and while they can look similar, they’re actually very different skin conditions that require very different treatment approaches.
☀️ Sun Damage Freckles
These are small, well-defined spots caused by UV exposure increasing pigment in the skin. They usually appear on areas like the face, chest and hands and can often respond well to treatments like skin rejuvenation, peels, or pigment-targeting therapies.
🌿 Melasma
Melasma is a deeper, hormonally influenced pigmentation condition that often appears as larger, patchy areas on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip or jawline. Heat, sun exposure, hormones and even certain treatments can trigger or worsen it, which is why it needs to be treated very carefully and strategically.
⚠️ Because melasma is easily exacerbated, aggressive pigment treatments or excess heat can actually make it worse if not properly assessed.
At Island Glow Aesthetics, our team is experienced in treating a variety of pigmentation conditions — including melasma — using safe, customised treatment plans designed to protect the skin barrier and avoid flare-ups.
If you’re unsure whether you’re dealing with melasma, freckles or another form of pigmentation, the best first step is a skin assessment.
