October is Pregnancy and Infant loss awareness month and we remember all those babies who were lost far too soon and their families 🤍

Today is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day, which recognises the importance of staying alcohol-free during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and planning a pregnancy.

When a pregnant person drinks alcohol, their baby does too. Drinking alcohol can have serious impacts on how a baby grows and can cause FASD. FASD can have lifelong impacts on a person’s learning and behaviour.

Every pregnancy is different and there are a range of factors that influence how a baby grows. The safest thing for your baby is to not drink at all, but it is never too late to stop drinking during your pregnancy.

For more information, visit https://yourroom.health.nsw.gov.au/

Help is available - contact Alcohol & Drug Information Support (ADIS). You can call them anytime on 1800 250 015, or talk online via webchat 8:30am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday https://yourroom.health.nsw.gov.au/getting-help/Pages/ADIS-Web-Chat.aspx

ADIS is completely free and confidential.

Western Sydney is currently conducting research to better understand women’s experiences with breastfeeding with the goal of improving breastfeeding support services across NSW.

If you have had a baby in a NSW public hospital in the last five years we would like your help to improve breastfeeding support.

Please complete our online survey looking at breastfeeding support and assessment during pregnancy. It takes about 5-10 minutes to compete and is anonymous.

The survey is part of a research project that aims to improve pregnancy breastfeeding support.

Here is the link to the survey with more information:

The research project is being led by clinical midwife consultant and researcher Dr Sarah Melov from Western Sydney Local History District. If you have any questions about this project, you can email her on sarah.melov@health.nsw.gov.au
