We need to change the narrative around ACL healing vs repairs. For so long the belief was that ruptured ACL'S HAD to have surgery to enable recovery and the evidence simply doesn't back this up anymore. Thanks to Kieren Richardson for this great summary via Physio Network. Link for the full article below.

"A systematic review showed that ACL full thickness ruptures CAN heal, with strategies including bracing, rehabilitation and strengthening and even no management at all (8, 9).Shifting the burden of proof, the authors highlighted the revelation there are in fact no high-quality studies showing the ligament CAN’T heal! In a national debate on ACL tear management which I was a part of at the end of 2021, Physiotherapists, Surgeon researchers and expert clinicians agreed ACL tears can heal. Pilot data from Australia due to be released in 2022 was discussed, with over 90% of fully ruptured ACL’s healing with a novel bracing protocol, and long-term return-to-play achieved."

🦴 A patient’s fracture risk increases as one leg stand time decreases, meaning that the shorter the time a patient is able to stand on one leg, the higher their risk of fracture is.

⏰ Improve one leg stand time = decrease injury risk!

I am a bit quiet posting on here this days but this article hits the nail on the head. Often folk want definitive answers about pain. Pain can be distressing, especially when it creates limitation and restriction and we can't do what we want to do with ease and comfort.

Sometimes there are clear mechanisms. A lot of the time pain is a response of the nervous system to a myriad of multi-faceted complex contributors.

: 100-year-old Jean Gartside has been a swimmer all her life. 🏊‍♀️💙

She used go for a daily swim, but these days she settles for going to the pool every second day.

"At a hundred, you’ve got to do something to keep out of the nursing home, and I certainly don’t want to go in to a nursing home," Jean says.

"I go down just to keep fit… for exercise, to keep my legs going. I think everybody needs to do some sort of sport."

Jean, who is fiercely independent, still drives herself to local pool in Bayswater and says there are more than just physical benefits.

"There’s a social aspect of it, I get to talk to people. If I don’t I just sit here by myself all day. I think when you get old like me, you need to get out, you don’t depend on people coming in."

She is instantly recognisable to the staff at the Bayswater pool when arrives around 7am, as she wears the same distinct pink dressing gown over her bathers every trip.
