Pain is a complex experience influenced not only by physical factors, but also by the nervous system, stress levels, and emotional wellbeing. When the body is under prolonged stress, the nervous system can remain in a heightened state, which may increase muscle tension and amplify the perception of pain.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that works by encouraging deep relaxation and supporting the nervous system. By helping the body shift out of a stress response, reflexology may assist in easing muscle tension and supporting the body’s natural pain-modulation processes. This relaxation response can influence how pain signals are perceived and processed.

Reflexology may also support circulation, helping to improve the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues while assisting with the removal of metabolic waste products. This can be particularly beneficial for areas of ongoing tension or discomfort.

While reflexology does not diagnose or treat medical conditions, it may be used alongside conventional care as part of a holistic approach to pain management. By supporting relaxation, circulation, and nervous system balance, reflexology can help improve comfort levels, body awareness, and overall wellbeing over time.

Healthy circulation is essential for every part of the body. Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to tissues, while the lymphatic system helps remove waste products and supports immune function. When circulation is compromised, people may experience cold hands and feet, fatigue, slower recovery, or a general feeling of heaviness in the body.

Reflexology works holistically, encouraging deep relaxation and supporting the nervous system. When the body moves out of a stress-response state, blood vessels can relax, which may help improve circulation throughout the body. This shift also supports lymphatic movement, allowing fluids and waste products to move more efficiently.

By supporting both blood and lymph flow, reflexology may help improve tissue health, energy levels, and the body’s natural ability to repair and restore itself. As a complementary therapy, it does not replace medical care, but it can be a valuable part of maintaining whole-body wellbeing and resilience over time.

The immune system is closely linked to the nervous system, lymphatic system, and the body’s response to stress. When the body is under prolonged stress, immune function can become less efficient, affecting recovery and resilience.

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that works by encouraging deep relaxation and supporting the body’s natural self-regulation. By helping to calm the nervous system, reflexology may assist in reducing the physiological effects of stress, which in turn supports immune processes.

Reflexology is also thought to support lymphatic flow, an important part of immune function that helps the body move waste products and maintain internal balance.

By working gently with the whole body rather than targeting symptoms alone, reflexology supports balance and resilience, helping the body function as effectively as possible over time.

Your brain is not a truth detector. It is a pattern learning machine. Neuroscience and psychology show that the brain strengthens whatever thoughts and messages are repeated most often, regardless of whether they are accurate or false. This process is rooted in neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to rewire itself based on experience and repetition.

When a thought is repeated, neural pathways associated with that idea become stronger. Over time, the brain begins to treat that thought as familiar and therefore believable. This is why repeated self talk can shape confidence, fear, motivation, and even self identity. Cognitive psychology explains this through concepts like confirmation bias and the illusory truth effect, where repeated statements feel more true simply because they are familiar.

Research also shows that the brain prefers efficiency. It conserves energy by relying on existing mental shortcuts rather than constantly checking facts. Once a belief is formed through repetition, the brain is more likely to seek information that supports it and ignore what challenges it. This mechanism can work for or against you.

Positive repetition can reinforce healthy habits, resilience, and learning. Negative repetition can deepen anxiety, self doubt, and limiting beliefs. This is why practices like cognitive behavioral therapy focus on identifying and changing repeated thought patterns.

What you consistently tell yourself matters. Your brain listens, adapts, and builds reality from repetition. Understanding this gives you the power to consciously shape your mindset using facts, awareness, and intentional thinking.

What role does the lymphatic system play in the detoxification process of the body, and how does reflexology support this function?

The lymphatic system plays a vital role in the detoxification process of the body. It is responsible for removing waste materials, toxins, and cellular debris from the body's tissues and organs. Here's how the lymphatic system supports detoxification:

1. Waste Removal: The lymphatic system collects and transports waste products, such as metabolic byproducts and cellular debris, away from the cells and tissues. These waste materials are carried by lymphatic fluid, which flows through a network of lymphatic vessels and nodes. The lymphatic system filters and purifies the lymphatic fluid, removing waste materials and toxins in the process.

2. Toxin Elimination: The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in eliminating toxins from the body. Toxins can enter the body through various sources such as pollution, chemicals, and processed foods. The lymphatic system helps to identify and remove these toxins by filtering them out of the lymphatic fluid and directing them towards the lymph nodes for further processing and elimination.

3. Immune Function: The lymphatic system is closely linked to the immune system. It contains specialized cells called lymphocytes that help to identify and neutralize pathogens, toxins, and other foreign substances. By supporting the immune function, the lymphatic system plays a crucial role in detoxification by defending the body against harmful invaders and promoting their elimination.

Ear Reflexology or Auricular Therapy is based on the idea that the body is mapped on to the ears as a micro system, just like on the hands and feet.

Visualizing the body on the ears is easily remembered as an image of the body in an inverted foetal shape. The lobe of the ear becomes the head, with the neck and entire spine extending up the curve of the outer ear.👂

A Reflexologist uses their fingers and thumbs to work all surfaces of the ear with a firm yet gentle pressure, squeezing the surface of the ear between thumb and finger, in small circular movements.👌

With ear reflexology there is also the addition of being able to apply an ear seed, to a specific point on the ear to further assist with pain management and issues in the body. This can actually be small black seeds from the Vaccaria plant, or small stainless steel and gold ball bearings or press spheres. 🌱

Auricular therapy has a long history from around 500 BC, and is the most scientific of the reflexology platforms.🥼

Ear Reflexology can be enjoyed as a stand alone treatment or combined in a session with other reflexology, and has the possibility of some rather phenomenal and rapid results. 🌟

Not all Reflexologists are trained to work on the ears, but if you find one in your area we highly recommend that you give it a try!

Free foot reflexology treatments on offer - April 6

Graduating diploma students from the Manawatu Reflexology Training school, now based in Whanganui, will be offering free foot reflexology treatments on Saturday 6 April at the Womens Network rooms - 75 St Hill Street from 10am to 3pm.

Julie Dean, RNZATP, from the school says, “Reflexology is a complementary health therapy which uses a specific pressure technique that works on precise reflex points on the feet, hands and ears which correspond with all areas of the body. This can promote balance and relaxation within the body. Reflexology is holistic and non-invasive working at the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.”

It can be summed in the saying, ‘Treat Your Feet, Treat Your Whole Body.’ It is believed that during a reflexology treatment more than 7000 nerves in the feet are stimulated helping the body to return to its natural rhythms. This is an opportunity to experience the benefit of reflexology for yourself.
