I’ve come to understand that happiness isn’t something we stumble upon, it’s something we cultivate. It’s not dictated by circumstance, nor is it gifted by ease or luck. Happiness is a mindset, a daily choice to orient ourselves toward hope, meaning, and possibility, even when adversity has left its mark.
Running my own therapy practice has been both a privilege and a profound act of self-belief. Fresh Horizons Counselling wasn’t born from perfection—it was born from persistence. From healing. From refusing to be defined by the hardest chapters of my story. I didn’t arrive here untouched by trauma; I arrived here because I chose not to let trauma be the final word.
We all carry lived experiences. Some are tender, some are jagged, some are still unfolding. But trauma, I believe, is not what happened to us—it’s how we recover. It’s the process of reclaiming our voice, our agency, our joy. It’s the quiet courage of showing up for ourselves again and again, even when the world has tried to convince us otherwise.
In my practice, I witness this courage daily. I see clients choosing growth over fear, connection over isolation, self-compassion over shame. I see the radical power of mindset; how a single shift in perspective can open doors to healing that once felt sealed shut.
I’ve learned that adversity doesn’t disqualify us from happiness. It deepens our capacity for it. It teaches us to savor the light, to honor the shadows, and to walk forward with both. And in choosing to lead a practice rooted in affirmation, creativity, and psychological safety, I’m choosing….every day….to model what recovery can look like when we refuse to be limited by what broke us.
