From 1 October 2026, personal care under Support at Home will be fully funded for eligible participants: a meaningful change for older Australians and the people supporting them.

Personal care isn’t an “extra.” It’s essential to health, dignity and everyday wellbeing. Removing out-of-pocket costs means people can access support like showering, dressing and continence care without added financial pressure.

While nothing changes just yet, this is an important step towards more accessible, equitable care at home.

If you’re unsure what these changes might mean for you or someone you support, we’re here to help you understand what’s next.

Today on ANZAC Day, we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for our country and our freedom.

From World War I to Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Timor, their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We also reflect on the many veterans we’ve had the privilege to know and support — remembering them not just for their service, but for who they were.

A special mention to our former teammate, Jed Flanagan, now serving in the Australian Air Force. We are incredibly proud of you.

Lest we forget.

Our Occupational Therapy program provides in-home assessments that help identify practical changes to improve safety and independence.

From recommending home modifications to assistive equipment, our team works closely with clients and housing providers to ensure the right supports are put in place, helping people live safely and comfortably at home for longer.

If you know someone who’d need this type of support, get in touch or submit a referral through our website.

Behind every older person we support is a wider story of family, culture, history and lived experience.

No two situations are the same. Some families are navigating complex care decisions for the first time. Others are balancing different cultural expectations, languages or ways of caring for elders. What they all have in common is trying to do what feels right for someone they love.

That’s why our work is never just about services or systems. We take the time to understand the whole picture: the family dynamics, cultural background, personal history and what matters most to everyone involved.

By listening first and meeting people where they are, we’re able to support decisions that feel respectful, culturally safe and right for the person and their family.

Our new name reflects something simple, but important.

It speaks to the way we see the people we support, not just as clients, but as individuals with stories, relationships, culture and lived experience.

“Elder” acknowledges wisdom, experience and the value of later life. “Folks” represents a sense of community and connection.

Together, it reflects a more human, respectful and inclusive way of thinking about ageing.

While our name has changed, our commitment remains the same: to support older Australians with dignity, understanding and care.

Homelessness among older Australians is a growing issue, particularly for older women, veterans and culturally diverse seniors.
Through our Senior Homelessness Prevention and Housing Project, we help people move from temporary or unsafe accommodation into stable, long-term housing.

From navigating housing applications to helping clients settle into their new home with essential services and support, our team works alongside each person to create a pathway to safety, stability and independence.

When David and Kylie’s aunt suddenly needed residential aged care, their family found themselves navigating an overwhelming and confusing system while trying to honour one very important wish: for their aunt and uncle to stay together.

After struggling to find available placements and facing complex financial and application processes, they reached out to our team for support.

We worked closely with the family and hospital staff to develop a clear plan, advocate with aged care providers, manage applications and secure suitable placements quickly, ensuring both relatives could remain together in care.

We’re grateful to have supported this family during such a stressful time, and to have helped create space for them to focus on what mattered most: being there for their loved ones.

Sometimes support is needed sooner than we expect — not because of one major event, but because small concerns have quietly become serious risks.

When safety, health or daily living start to decline, early intervention can make all the difference. Crisis support is about protecting dignity, wellbeing and ensuring the right care is in place at the right time.

At Elder Folks, we help families recognise when extra support is needed and step in with calm, practical guidance during difficult moments. You don’t have to navigate urgent situations alone.

Linda* is a single mother living with late-stage kidney failure and requires dialysis three times a week. Her four-year-old son John* has complex developmental and behavioural needs that require constant supervision, routine and a stable, familiar environment. We were contacted and it was clear the family was under immense pressure and that their current housing situation could not support Linda’s medical needs or provide the safety and stability her son required.

We worked quickly to gather the evidence needed to support an urgent housing transfer. We coordinated a comprehensive functional capacity assessment for John and a home environment assessment for Linda with our Occupational Therapist.

At the same time, we connected the family with an NDIS provider and helped initiate early intervention and behavioural supports for John. This ensured he had appropriate services in place, and gave Linda reassurance that her son would be supported while she focused on managing her health.

With strong clinical evidence and targeted advocacy, Linda was able to apply for an urgent housing transfer to a home where she can access dialysis safely and continue caring for her son. With the right support now coordinated, the family has greater stability, improved safety and the peace of mind needed to move forward.

Some kind words from a past client, Paul, who we were happy to help when Paul’s family needed support in finding the right aged care home for their dad.

The systems can be new and complex for anyone to navigate. That’s why we do what we do, and our team has got the experience to make these changes easier.

The story from Aged Care Placement Services to Elder Folks. 🧡

When we first began as Aged Care Placement Services in 2012, our focus was on helping families navigate residential aged care. Over time, that work grew — and so did the needs of the people we support.

Today, many of the individuals and families we work with aren’t just looking to move into residential aged care. They’re looking to live longer in their homes with care and guidance. Our new name reflects that broader role.

What hasn’t changed is our approach — taking the time to listen, understand, and support people with care, respect and clarity.

Our new website will be live very soon so keep your eyes peeled!
