Farewell King Island

So my time has come to say goodbye to King Island and the King Island Hospital & Health Centre.

I moved here just over four years ago, and it has certainly been a journey with many challenges.

The redevelopment started 3 months after I arrived and COVID hit 3 months later.

It was certainly a bumpy start to my time however the bonus is the team at the hospital are exceptional and were able to adapt to all the changes, noise of building works and everything else thrown at us.

Without every single staff member, the hospital does not function. It takes everyone doing their job to keep it running and I am so grateful for the team we have.

During my time the team has passed 2 separate accreditations for Aged Care and Acute Care as well as a further 2 recertifications. The team has done exceptionally well in passing both these as well as becoming a 5 star rated Age Care facility as per the Commonwealth Requirements.

Post the redevelopment we have updated the medical equipment including beds, ultrasounds, Xray machine, medical trolleys, observation machines, blood warmers etc.

The hospital auxiliary has really assisted with so many new items like a blanket warmer, TV’s for Netherby, updating all our training manikins and have also provided recliner chairs for the acute inpatient rooms and soon for Netherby Home too.

I feel really fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with such a wonderful team and I know I am bias however I feel King Island is so fortunate to have a state-of-the-art Hospital and Aged Care facility that meets the highest of standards with the most dedicated staff.

Thank you for having me here, I have met some fantastic people and enjoyed working with the different services across King Island.

Kind regards,
Amanda Gill

I am so proud to work at King Island Hospital & Health Centre. We have an amazing team and a fantastic facility that is particularly special as all the residents are so well cared for.

Happy Aged Care Employee Day! 🎉 Today, we're sending a heartfelt thank you to all the amazing aged care staff across the state.

💙 From nurses to cleaners, from allied health professionals to maintenance staff and admin – all play a vital role in creating a compassionate and caring environment for older Tasmanians.

At the King Island Multi-Purpose Centre, staff (pictured) have created a little community of their own, checking in on each other and sharing warm greetings throughout the day.

They share a little bit of their journey caring for elderly King Island residents:

🗨️ They are my family (Sharon)
🗨️ It’s lovely listening to their stories and experiences (Liz)
🗨️ It’s really rewarding and I like giving back (Rachael)
🗨️ They make me miss my grandparents and they make me smile everyday with their little comments (Jane)
🗨️ They appreciate what you do for them (John)

If you know someone in aged care, don't forget to share your appreciation today. 💙

KI community members, you have until Friday to provide feedback.

🗨️ Tasmanians have until Friday to provide feedback on the Tasmanian Government's Long Term Plan for Healthcare 2040.

👉 The Tasmanian Government's Long Term Plan for Healthcare in Tasmania 2040 is now open for public consultation, and we want to hear from you.

The exposure draft can be accessed here: https://www.health.tas.gov.au/publications/long-term-plan-healthcare-tasmania-2040-exposure-draft?fbclid=IwAR0A2kDY-l04_ji5ShVED8kNpUrlAT3RAPAhE_Oe5suUr2ffnEzEMh7ENJs

📧 To provide feedback, you can email ourhealthcarefuture@health.tas.gov.au until Friday 19 May 2023.

The exposure draft of the Plan recently released is about delivering connected care across every part of the health system – hospitals, subacute, rehabilitation, mental health services and primary care in the community.

Our goal is to ensure Tasmanians receive comprehensive healthcare services.
It focuses on expanding in-reach and home-based models of care and takes advantage of the learnings from COVID@homeplus so that we can expand virtual care options.

It will allow existing services such as the Community Rapid Response Service, Community Nursing, Rapid Access In Reach Service, and Hospital in the Home to be more connected and integrated.

I missed this post at Christmas. Two of our fantastic dedicated nurses here at King Island Hospital & Health Centre 🙏🏻👏🏻

“If one is not with their family on Christmas Day, spending time with the residents of Netherby Home might just be the next best thing.” ✨

👩‍⚕️ Meet Registered Nurses Tanya and Sam, of King Island. This holiday season, they are caring for patients at the King Island Hospital and residents of the local residential aged care.

This year, Sam drew the short straw and worked a late shift on Christmas Day. Tanya will be pulling on the uniform for a run of night shifts between Christmas and New Year 🌜

“Invariably, there will be the odd presentation to our Emergency First Response Unit as there is always a new bike to fall off or the aftermath of some over-indulgence, but overall, there is a great atmosphere,” Sam says.

“Most (aged care) residents head out for a portion of the day to spend time with their loved ones, and staff partners and temporary staff are welcome to come in and join the workers and remaining residents for a traditional Aussie Christmas spread,” Tanya adds. 🥳

🎁 She says each year, the Hospital Auxiliary provides a generous sum to purchase gifts for the residents, adding to the cheerful spirit.

Thank you, Sam and Tanya 🙏 and thank you to all the amazing health workers caring for patients throughout the holiday period.
