Can Osteopathy help my Osteoporosis?

Osteopathic Care can support patients who experience back pain associated with Osteoporotic fractures and postural compensations.
However, it is well documented that high intensity load bearing exercise can increase bone mineral density and reduce the risk of developing osteopenia, or progressing to osteoporosis.

We are pleased to support our patients with MedX equipment and programs specifically designed for Osteoporosis. The programs focus on progressive strengthening and increased load and intensity over a period of 8 weeks ( 2 x weekly sessions). The MedX is designed to avoid vertical loading which can contribute to compression fractures in severe conditions.

What can I do about my shin splints?

This is a common condition which affects recreational runners and sports involving jumping (eg gymnastics). This can be recurrent and hard to fix. You may have even stopped your sport completely and let rest do it’s thing… only to find that it came back when you did!

There are some simple and specific exercises you can try daily to get on top of this pesky presentation :

- calf raises (focus on the eccentric phase ie slowing down as heel comes back down). Start with 1 x set of 12 and slowly build up to 3 x 12. If too difficult to begin with, start on a flat surface rather than steps

- calf stretches x 4 per side after the raises. You may find the calves are actually more flexible as a result of the raises

- rolling the plantar aspect of the foot on a trigger ball for 2min can release the fascia which is often tense

- foam roller (or better still, a trigger stick) for rolling out the anterior shin muscles for 2min

Other considerations and adjunctive approaches:
- compression sleeves or socks for activity
- taking an aspirin can prevent a flare up
- apply ice post activity

If your symptoms worsen or you experience pain during the exercises, contact our clinic to commence a rehab plan.
