Pertussis is usually called ‘whooping cough’. It spreads very easily from one person to another through the air, like a cold. When someone who already has the disease coughs or sneezes, the pertussis germs float through the air on tiny droplets. If a baby breathes in those droplets, they can catch pertussis, too. Pertussis irritates the airways, which causes long coughing fits that can be very severe. Small babies can die from whooping cough.

Hi,

My name is Beth and I am the Acting Practice Manager at Cygnet Family Practice. I want to share my story with you. In January this year my dad was rushed into the Royal Hobart Hospital with a gastric bleed, which left him extremely unwell and fighting for his life. During his time at the Royal, he required a blood transfusion due to the blood loss. After sitting in the emergency department and watching the transfusion taking place, I decided that I could make a difference by starting to donate blood. So this month I made my first blood donation, which is capable of saving 3 lives. Donating blood can be done once every 12 weeks and only takes roughly 45minutes from start to finish and you also get some very yummy snacks afterwards and are treated like royalty by the staff for your donation.

Next month I am making my first donation of plasma, new donations of plasma are needed every 35 seconds in Australia and is always in demand, it is used in treating some burns, cancers, hemorrhages and so much more. Plasma can be donated typically every 28days, however it does require a little bit more time.

I am hoping that my post updates for each donation that I make, encourages more people to donate and help to continue to save lives across the country.

Thank you,
Beth
