Albany Day Hospital hosts Vascular GP Education Evening to launch new Varicose Vein Treatment Service

Recently, Albany Day Hospital welcomed GPs and emergency doctors from across the Great Southern region for an engaging vascular education evening led by Dr Mahmoud Al-Najjar, consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon.

Dr Al-Najjar, who holds dual fellowships in rural generalist and vascular surgery, shared valuable insights on the early detection of peripheral arterial disease, venous insufficiency, and minimally invasive treatments now available locally at Albany Day Hospital.

His presentation emphasised the importance of timely referrals and collaborative care, particularly in regional areas where access to advanced diagnostics can be limited.

Attendees were especially interested in case studies showing how local access to vascular procedures can spare patients the cost and disruption of travelling to Perth. Dr Al-Najjar also outlined referral pathways and imaging protocols to make specialist input even more efficient.

The evening concluded with a Q&A and networking session, reinforcing Nexus Hospitals’ commitment to continuing education and multidisciplinary collaboration.

“Our facility has enabled specialist practitioners like Dr Al-Najjar and others across surgical and procedural disciplines to expand their private practice from Perth to Albany,” said Martlie Horn, General Manager/Director of Nursing at Albany Day Hospital.

“For patients in the Great Southern, the establishment of local venous services has been a game changer, significantly reducing wait times and eliminating the need to travel for many procedures.”

This event comes at a time when Albany’s healthcare options continue to improve. Opened in 2019, Albany Day Hospital continues to play a pivotal role in expanding specialist-led healthcare services for the Great Southern community.

Appreciation Post for A/Prof Simon Skalicky’s Inspiring Work in Mongolia 👏🌏

We’re delighted to share the incredible work of Windsor Private Hospital's Ophthalmologist, A/Prof Simon Skalicky, who recently travelled to Mongolia with Sight For All to teach glaucoma surgery and support local eye health teams.

A/Prof Skalicky, a leading glaucoma specialist, worked side-by-side with Mongolian ophthalmologists to help improve care in areas where glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are still major causes of blindness.

Using Sight For All’s sustainable “teach a man to fish” approach, he focused on training and empowering local clinicians to diagnose and manage complex eye conditions, creating real, lasting impact for communities across both rural and urban regions.

By sharing his skills and supporting local eye health workers, A/Prof Skalicky and his colleagues are helping change the future for thousands of people who rely on improved vision care.

We’re incredibly proud to have him as part of the Nexus Windsor Private Hospital team 👏💙

☀️ National Skin Cancer Action Week is a timely reminder for all Australians to protect their skin and prioritise regular skin checks.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world — yet most cases can be prevented by following the five forms of sun protection:
🧴 Slip on sun-protective clothing
🕶️ Slop on SPF30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen
👒 Slap on a wide-brimmed hat
🌳 Seek shade
🌤️ Slide on sunglasses

The health and well-being of our people and patients is always our highest priority. Celebrating Creativity and Connection at Pacific Private 🌿🎩

For the past decade, Pacific Private Hospital has celebrated Melbourne Cup Day with a unique twist turning recyclable materials into runway-worthy creations!

Each year, the team comes together for sweeps, lunch, and a spirited fascinator and outfit competition, where every design must be made from recyclable products found within the hospital (non-contaminated, of course). The results? An incredible showcase of imagination and teamwork from gowns crafted from surgical wrap to fascinators made of cardboard and ribbon.

The event is judged by our doctors, with prizes like chocolates and gift vouchers up for grabs. But the real reward is the joy it brings to staff and patients alike.

One of our team members shared, “It’s a great reminder of what we can achieve together and how a little creativity can go a long way.”

Moments like these reflect what life at Pacific Private is all about - connection, creativity, and community. Even in the busiest time of year, our team finds ways to celebrate together and keep spirits high.

Here’s to ten years of laughter, sustainability, and shared celebration at Pacific Private! ♻️💚

Today, the world’s attention turns to World Sight Day 👁️ – a global initiative dedicated to eye care awareness and equitable access.

This year’s theme, 💚 encourages everyone to prioritise their eye health — at home, at work, and in everyday life.

Protecting your vision can be as simple as:

〰️ Taking regular screen breaks by following the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
〰️ Wearing sunglasses and a hat for UV protection
〰️ Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3s, vitamins, and minerals to help slow macular degeneration and diabetes-related vision loss
〰️ Quitting smoking
〰️ Wearing safety glasses in hazardous environments
〰️ Scheduling routine eye checks every two years, or more often if you’re at risk

Our hospital is proud to support better eye health by providing high-quality ophthalmic care to our local community.

Take time to love your eyes this World Sight Day 💙. Book an eye test 👓 if your vision has changed, and encourage others to do the same.

🧡 World Patient Safety Day – Teamwork in Action

Today is World Patient Safety Day, and at our hospital we’re highlighting the importance of surgical safety through the power of teamwork.

A key part of this is Team Time Out – a brief pause before surgery where the team confirms the patient’s identity, the procedure, and the surgical site. This critical step which forms part of the World Health Organisation’s Surgical Safety Checklist enhances communication, prevents errors, and keeps patient safety front of mind.

This July marked the fifth year of Time Out audits across our hospital network, and it was our biggest and best yet! Every one of our 22 hospitals participated, with 462 doctors audited by Nexus Hospitals nursing champions – the highest level of engagement to date – further strengthening the compliance and collaboration across our theatres.

A huge thank you to our doctors and employees who made this year such a success, and our Chief Medical Officer Anthony Chambers for leading this important initiative. Patient safety starts with our teams around the table and together we’re making every check count.

💛 Today is R U OK? Day 💛

Caring for people is at the heart of everything we do not just for our patients, but for each other.

R U OK? Day is an important reminder to check in with the people around us. A simple, genuine “Are you okay?” can open the door to a conversation that makes all the difference.

In healthcare, we’re often busy giving our best to others, and it’s easy to miss the small signs that a colleague or friend might be struggling. You don’t need to have all the answers - just being present, listening without judgment, and encouraging support can truly help.

We encourage everyone today, and every day, to:
✔️ Check in with someone you care about
✔️ Listen with empathy
✔️ Encourage seeking help when needed
✔️ Take time to look after your own wellbeing too

Our hospital is committed to building a culture of kindness, compassion, and connection. Thank you to our incredible team for all that you do not just today, but every day.

Let's keep the conversations going. 💛

💗 Women’s Health Week: Say yes to your health, it’s worth it.

This week we're proud to support Women’s Health Week and encourage our clinicians, staff, and patients to put their well-being first. It’s more than awareness—it’s your reminder to prioritise your health.

This week’s focus:

✅ Every check matters: Stay up-to-date with routine checks and screenings.
🧭 Take the lead: Come prepared—use the right info and tools to get more from your appointments.
❤️ Heart smart: Heart disease affects women in ways often overlooked—let’s talk about it.
🦋 Pain to power: Pain isn’t “just part of being a woman.” You don’t have to push through it alone.
🧠 Be kind to your mind: Caring for mental health is just as important as caring for your body.

Our commitment:

🩺 Encouraging regular health checks and early screening
🧠 Providing confidential mental health support through TELUS Health
🌱 Supporting wellness programs across our national hospital network
🗣️ Fostering a workplace where women feel safe to speak up, seek support and be recognised

Corymbia Day Hospital

Corymbia is located in Dandenong, around 30km south-east of the City of Melbourne, in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. It was Victoria’s first purpose-built day surgery, and is named after the flower of the Eucalyptus corymbia ficifolia – a red flowering gum native to the Dandenong area.

With two modern, well-equipped theatres, we combine outstanding surgical facilities, an experienced nursing team and our strong capability in hospital management to put quality patient care first.

Corymbia Day Hospital is accredited to AS/NZS ISO 9001:2016 and the NSQHS Standards.
