💫 Remember when photos were just… memories?

Before filters, hashtags, and reels — there was us.
Ten years ago, back in 2015, Encore Pilates was the only Pilates studio in Darwin. (And before that we didn’t even have a phone that took photos!!) We’d snap photos and record little video clips during workshops and trainings — not to post or promote, but to remember.

These were the days before online learning existed. If we wanted to upskill, the best we could do was buy a DVD — or spend thousands traveling interstate or overseas to learn from the greats. So, we did the next best thing: we brought the educators to us.

We invited national presenters to our tiny corner of the country — long before most people even knew where Darwin was — and made sure our instructors had access to the same quality education as anywhere else in Australia. Those photos captured a time when learning was hands-on, in-person, and full of heart.

Looking back now, it’s wild to think how much has changed. But these memories remind us of what hasn’t — our love of learning, our belief in face-to-face education, and our ongoing commitment to putting Darwin on the Pilates map.

Here’s to the days when photos weren’t about perfection… they were about passion, purpose, and remembering what mattered most. ❤️

🧜‍♀️ Mermaid magic at Encore Pilates ✨

We all love finishing a session with Mermaid because it feels amazing 💕 but the real goal of this exercise is to create lateral movement through the spine 🌊 not just to push the carriage out.

What we often see is people reaching as far as they can with the arm and carriage 💪 which creates a nice side bend but not much actual ribcage movement. True lateral flexion happens when the ribs and spine move, not just the equipment 🌀

To improve your Mermaid, focus on keeping your hips grounded and heavy in the carriage 🧘‍♀️ As you begin to push the carriage away, think about opening the outside of your ribcage instead of reaching farther. Imagine your ribs moving like Venetian blinds 🪟 expanding and creating space through the side body.

This awareness builds thoracic mobility and helps you feel the movement through your ribs and spine rather than just in your arm or shoulder 💫 It’s a simple shift that changes the quality of the exercise completely.

That’s the difference between doing a fitness movement and practicing Pilates with intention 🩰
