Nurses and midwives have always stood up against hate and violence to protect our patients, our communities, and each other. This matters now more than ever.
The nursing community has been shaken by the fatal shooting of intensive care nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, USA. Pretti was a 37-year-old ICU nurse at the Veterans Affairs Health Care System who cared deeply for his patients and community. His death has sparked widespread mourning and condemnation from nurses, healthcare workers and the global community.
This tragedy, together with recent acts of hate and violence both locally and globally is a stark reminder that healthcare workers, people who devote their lives to healing, are not always protected.
Right now, nurses, midwives and healthcare professionals around the world are risking their lives to deliver care in conflict zones. Hospitals are being struck, and patients are being left without life-saving treatment. Attacks on health workers are a breach of international humanitarian law and undermine the core values of healthcare — neutrality, humanity, and protection for the sick and wounded.
Healthcare must never be a target.
That’s why we are calling on the Australian Government to:
1️⃣ Continue to press for full protection of healthcare workers under the Geneva Conventions, ensuring these international laws are upheld in every conflict.
2️⃣ Use Australia’s voice on the global stage to demand accountability and safety for nurses, midwives and all those who provide essential care.
We must stand together as a profession and as a community that believes in peace, dignity and protection for every person — especially those who care for others.
