Trish was a Pollie who really cared and we, NT Breast Cancer Voice and Dragons Abreast NT in Darwin were so very fortunate to have this lady’s support. She opened a few doors for us, introduced us to many helpful people and was always just there for us and our many and varied breast cancer journeys.

Her support even included turning up at a Dragon Boat Carnival at Darwin’s Cullen Bay Marina and, in the heat of the mid October wet season build up, hopping into a dragon boat, paddling hard through the race, climbing out on shaky legs, getting changed in a hurry, and racing off to catch an afternoon flight to Canberra. We never did manage another dragon boat but her on-land support was magnificent. A fellow member, Susan Tulley recalls being tightly wedged into the above-mentioned dragon boat next to Trish at the back of the boat. Trish advised us later she couldn’t walk when she disembarked from her flight to Canberra later the same day.

Thank you Trish, our condolences to your family and close friends.

This is an incredibly sad report to make. In recent weeks we have lost two (2) of our beautiful ladies. Both very bravely faced the reality and consequences of metastatic breast cancer.

Please see below and attached links to a trial program - ‘EMPOWER-SMS GP’.
Dr Nashid Hafiz, a Research Fellow at the Daffodil Centre (University of Sydney and Cancer Council NSW) has reached out to Judy at NTBCV to share information on this program. The team, led by Dr Anna Singleton, is conducting a clinical trial to test whether a 6-month text message support program can improve physical activity and healthy eating among people who have completed active breast cancer treatment within the past 3 years.

“It can be hard to manage your health when recovering from a cancer treatment. You are not alone. You are invited to try the EMPOWER-SMS GP program, led by the University of Sydney, which sends text messages about general well-being, physical activity and nutrition. If you’re in Australia and over 18 years old, finished active breast cancer treatment in the past 3 years and have a mobile phone, you can consider joining.
