WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY
Hypnosis has been used for centuries in various cultures around the world. The term “hypnosis” has been around since the 1840s. Healers began using this technique, or some form of it centuries earlier. Hypnotism is a tool for health and originated in ancient India, and the ancient Greeks, Romans & Egyptians took their sick to sleep temples to be cured by hypnotic suggestion.
Hypnosis, or a trance is a naturally occurring state. It is a state that we all go in and out of, not only in our awake state but in different states of sleep and induced by hypnosis. We all go in and out of trances frequently in our awake state. Hypnosis actually has very little to do with sleep, and everything to do with focus. Imagine reading a book, watching television, soldering a tiny wire into a tiny connector, day dreaming, like driving and getting to your destination, without any conscious memory of the last 10 kilometres, or any task you tend to zone out, whilst carrying it out. In actual fact, you're not zoned out but zoned in! These are naturally occurring trance states. The mind and the body are in “automatic pilot” mode.
Hypnosis used to be a mystery. The consensus was that “we know it works, but not how it works. These days, there is scientific evidence and understanding of what hypnosis is, and it’s central role in programming instinctive behaviour. There is scientific proof and understanding of this using EEG (Electroencephalogram) MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Hypnosis is intimately connected with Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep, which occurs during dreaming. More recent research using modern brain imaging techniques, show that the connections in the brain are different during hypnosis. In particular, those areas of the brain involved in making decisions and monitoring the environment show strong connections. What this means is that under hypnosis the person is able to focus on what they are doing, without asking why they are doing it, or checking the environment for changes which is what the conscious mind does. Because the conscious mind does this, it can stop people from achieving their desired results or goals.
WHO CAN HYPNOTHERAPY HELP?
Hypnotherapy has been proven to be of benefit in helping adults and children of most ages, to overcome many of the modern world’s health and emotional problems. Hypnosis is powerful, and can lead to a quicker resolution of life’s problems through therapy. All our habits, experiences including the way we are conditioned due to our upbringing, and things we do are ingrained in our unconscious mind, some of it through repetition in our awake state. Hypnotherapy is a quicker way to achieve results, using the unconscious mind.
HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK
As we all know the brain has 2 parts, “The Conscious” and the Unconscious”. There is what is called the “Critical Faculty” that separates the conscious from the unconscious mind. The conscious mind controls how we think, feel and what we do. It also questions everything we do. The unconscious mind is where everything we have learnt throughout our lives is stored, everything within our experience and capabilities, like our habits, how we learnt to crawl, walk, ride a bike and so on. Under hypnosis, we are able to cross the “Critical Faculty” into the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind does not question. Hence the reason that during therapy, we are able to change and retrain the mind to benefit us.
The experience of hypnosis (or trance), can vary dramatically from one person to another. Different reactions, can range from a sense of profound relaxation, to a calm state of being fully aware. Remembering the most important aspect, and that is the person experiencing hypnosis is always in control. I cannot make you do anything against your beliefs and values. The process involves guiding the client into a deep state of relaxation where I am able to, by the power of suggestion, plant the desired goal into the client’s unconscious mind.
Hypnosis is a ‘do with” process, not a “do to” process. In my view, this is partly because hypnosis is a partnership process between the client and the therapist. The client and I have to work together, in order to focus on, and achieve the client’s goal. By working together with the hypnosis experience, the client takes control of their life, own experience, and their success toward their goal.
I work with the client to achieve the intended goal by guiding them through the hypnosis process.
The client is always relaxed and in an awake state, and is in control at all times. There are instances when the client is so totally relaxed that they can go to sleep, but this does not happen very often.
Hypnosis is totally safe process and is totally natural.
My business is based on happy clients and referrals. Your success is my success. There is no better feeling than to hear that my clients have succeeded in achieving their goals. There is nothing else that compares to the effectiveness of these processes.
