On Remembrance Day, we reflect on the bravery and sacrifices made by our service men and women. At Deakin Private Hospital, we are deeply proud to care for our Veterans and military personnel through our specialised PTSD/Trauma ward, Beeches, offering support and specialised services to those who’ve served our nation.

We are committed to continuing to provide the highest level of care to those who’ve given so much in defense of our freedoms.

Lest we forget.

Wrapping up Mental Health Month with an insightful session by Dr. Ashish Vaikyl!

On the final day of , we had the privilege of hearing from Dr. Vaikyl, Consultant Psychiatrist, who shared valuable insights into the critical role carers play in the mental health system.

Dr. Vaikyl's presentation highlighted:
- The vital support carers provide for individuals with mental health conditions, disabilities, chronic illnesses, and more.
- Key Australian statistics, including the fact that over 3 million carers are part of our communities.
- How carers help with daily tasks, transportation, medication management, and emotional support.

We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to host this session and contribute to the ongoing conversation about the essential role of carers in our community.
Thank you to all who attended and to Dr. Vaikyl for his expertise and passion in raising awareness for the unsung heroes—our carers.

Meet Brainiac Banx 🐾
Last week we recognised one of our most loyal visitors — the lovely Banksie!

Banksie is an assistance dog for one of our patients in the Beeches ward and he’s become a true member of the Deakin Private Hospital family. His calm presence, gentle nature, and unconditional support have made a remarkable impact not only on his owner but on others in our PTSD program as well.

To show our gratitude, Banksie received his very own Certificate of Appreciation — well deserved for this four-legged legend!

This Mental Health Month, we’re shining a light on the incredible people who make up our team — and the personal insights that inspire their work.
For Darryn Steyn, one of our dedicated Registered Nurses, mental wellbeing is about resilience — finding the strength to adapt and move forward when life gets tough.

He was inspired to work in mental health by a deep curiosity about people, and the profound difference that care and compassion can make.

His advice for anyone supporting a loved one through a mental health challenge? “Be a compassionate listener. You don’t have to solve their problems — your presence and understanding are often what matter most.”
