Permission granted!!!!!

Christmas comes with so many pressures and “shoulds” from others. Permission granted to say no, Irish exit, look after yourself, and advocate like you need to. Let’s look after ourselves and each other these Christmas holidays! 🤶🏼

Holiday parties are all fun and games until your social battery hits 2 percent and you quietly vanish like a festive ghost.

If you’re the “Irish exit to save my nervous system” type… we see you.
Crowds are hard. Noise is hard. Small talk is basically an Olympic sport.

You’re not rude. You’re regulated.
And leaving early is a completely valid coping strategy.

Currently locked out and reflecting on feeling out of control. If it’s not within your control, let it go and regulate. If it is within your control (certainty feels so good!), hold it lightly and remind yourself things may change. Look after that nervous system!

No hug today? Cool.
Wave? Smile? Dinosaur roar? Also cool.

Kids don’t owe anyone physical affection.
Consent starts now.
Autonomy starts now.
Safety starts now.

Let them choose the greeting that feels right in their little body. 💛

Take a playful approach with teens. You can get pulled into arguing everything, negotiating, and being really serious, but at the end of the day, PACE works best:

Playful
Acceptance
Curiosity
Empathy

Try it out!

👀 Ohhh we have heard this one a few times.

So here’s the secret that every child psychologist, OT, speechie and play therapist knows:

Kids don’t open up because we ask them to.
They open up because they feel safe.

And real therapeutic change?
That happens in relationship, regulation, and connection…
…not in a lecture, worksheet, or a “so tell me how school is going?” moment.

Sometimes the most important work looks like:
🎨 Painting quietly together
🃏 Cheeky rounds of Uno
🎭 Pretend play
🛠️ Building Lego
✏️ Drawing side by side
🧸 Letting a child direct the session
🌱 Co-regulating, attuning, following their lead

To adults it may look like “just playing.”
To us, it’s:
✨ Nervous system regulation
✨ Building trust
✨ Practising flexibility + frustration tolerance
✨ Emotional expression
✨ Social reciprocity
✨ Attachment work
✨ Safety, safety, safety

Kids tell us who they are through play long before they have the words.
And tuning in to that world is… the whole point.

So yes. Sometimes therapy is Uno.
And that’s exactly why it works.

👇 Parent hive, tell us:
What activity does your child open up through the most?
