First Aid Friday – Treatment for seizure (Epilepsy)
The First Aid Friday this week focuses on management of seizures. The Epilepsy Foundation (Australia) estimates that 1% of the population lives with epilepsy. Approximately 1 in 25 of us will be diagnosed with epilepsy during our lifetime. It’s a relatively rare condition so only a few of us will know someone with the condition. Thus this refresher is probably one of the more important “First Aid Fridays”. Check out the Epilepsy Australia website for more details: https://epilepsyfoundation.org.au/understanding-epilepsy/seizure-first-aid/

Congratulations to Nixon West who was selected as the male Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches Junior Lifesaver of the Year (JLOTY) at the Branch Awards on Friday night!👑🥳

Nixon will now go on to represent the entire Sydney Northern Beaches Branch at the Surf Life Saving NSW JLOTY program in April ⛱️⛑️

Good luck Nixon. You're an awesome young Surf Life Saver and you have already made all of us at Dee Why SLSC very proud. True to his character, just a few days before the award Nixon volunteered the last weekdays of his school holidays to act as Water Safety at a program offering rural kids their first visit to the ocean 👏👏

Our excellent Mia Ryko also represented Dee Why SLSC at the Branch awards as our female Nominee. Mia is another fabulous young Surf Life Saver, and has made a huge contribution to our Patrolling strengths already in just her first season. 🥳🏆

A big congratulations also to our u14's Age Managers Sanja and Chris, who have produced an outstanding group of Surf Rescue Certificate holders this season 🙏✅🥇

Sun Run 2026 @ Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club ! ☀️🏃‍➡️

What a great morning - congratulations to the record 10,000 runners who ran from Dee Why to Manly!⚡🙏

A huge thank you to the 70 volunteers from Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club who arrived between 4am and 5am to help make the day possible. Our friends at North Steyne S.L.S.C also provided volunteers at the end of the Sun Run

Thanks to Northern Beaches Council for organising the event, and thanks also for a donation for providing volunteers.

Dee Why SLSC will use the funds in our Lifesaving, Education and Nippers programs for the benefit of the community. It's the ultimate Win-Win-Win 🥳🙌🎂

See you all next year!!!

Runners - if you enjoyed your time in Dee Why, take a look at our Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate and Nippers programs at dyslsc.org.au . We'd love to have you on our team. 🛟⛑️

First Aid Fridays – Heat Induced Illness (hyperthermia or “Heat stroke”)
We have had some real scorchers this summer already and there are plenty of days left for more very hot days so this reminder is designed to help you identify and treat hyperthermia (“heat stroke”) in the event someone needs help. Heat stroke is potentially fatal especially for the very young and old so identifying it and acting quickly is vital. A thermometer is available in the first aid room on the bench. See summary attached.

Congratulations to Mia and Nixon on being Dee Why SLSC's Junior Life Saver of the Year (JLOTY) Nominations for Season '25/'26⛑️🛟

The Surf Life Saving NSW JLOTY program focuses on self-leadership, socialisation, teamwork, surf lifesaving and self-awareness. It's been our honour to be able to participate again this year with such fine candidates!

Mia and Nixon both progressed through our Nippers Age programs from u6s/u7s. They both received their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) at our October Long Weekend intensive training course in October '25 and joined our Surf Life Saving patrols shortly after 🍎☀️🍎☀️

They have both already patrolled over 60 hours as Surf Life Savers this season, along with undertaking additional SLS training and courses. They are both tremendous young lifesavers, participating in a range of rescues and preventive actions for the benefit of all beachgoers 😎⛱️

We've had the privilege this year of having a excellent crew of Dee Why SRC members coming through the ranks, and it's great to see the infectious energy our young Life Savers bring to our Patrols💡⚡

We are extremely proud and grateful of ALL of our SRC members, and we wish them all the best through their Surf Life Saving journey 😁

Looking at our friends Northern Beaches Council post about the Sun Run we couldn't help but notice an impressive aerial photo of a Rip Current! 🌊

If you're coming back to Dee Why to collect a car on Saturday after the run, it's a fact that the best way to recover from the Sun Run is with a swim at Dee Why ⛱️

Here's some tips to spot a Rip Current:
- Deeper and/or darker water 🕶️
- Fewer breaking waves 🌊
- Sandy coloured water extending beyond the surf zone ⏳
- Significant water movement 💦

Look out for the 65+ Dee Why SLSC volunteers helping run the Start Zone of the Sun Run and all the way to the Curl Curl lagoon - please say hi as you're running past 👋🏃🏃‍♀️

We'll have our Surf Life Saving Patrol on the beach on Saturday from 9am-6pm, please feel free stop by to say hello and ask any advice on beach safety 🛟⛑️

If you'd like to become a Surf Life Saver, our next Bronze Medallion Course begins on 7th February. We'd love to have you as part of our team 😁. Details are at dyslsc.org.au

Have a great run everyone, and we'll see you at the Start Line

First Aid Friday – First aid and resuscitation kits checks
Do you know where the “Major Haemorrhage” and “Asthma/Anaphylaxis” kits are? Do you know what they contain? The resuscitation and first aid equipment checks are vital to ensure we are equipped in an emergency, and everyone knows where everything is. Checklists are located on the wall in the first aid room, in the first aid kits and the resuscitation bags. While there is widespread good will in relation to this important practice (THANK YOU) there is variability in the ex*****on of 2 important steps i.e., restocking and informing the first aid officer of missing or expired stock. The cupboards in the first aid are not locked and labelled for your convenience (email the First Aid Officer: firstaid.officer@dyslsc.org.au if something is missing/you have a question) Please read the attached as a reminder. It would also be appreciated if the first aid room floor could be swept and washed on Sundays (our cleaners cannot clean the FA room for O H & S reasons!!)

It's a very common question we get - is Dee Why Beach open or closed for swimming at the moment? 🤔

Here's the best answer - check out the SLS Beachsafe website! 💡🧑‍💻

It includes current information and conditions for every beach in Australia. It shows Lifesaver and Lifeguard patrol services, hazards and facilities as well as weather, swell and tide details 🌊🏖️🛟

Check it out here https://beachsafe.org.au/, and it's also available via an App on both Apple and Android 🤳📲

Yep - it's really good... the writer of this post personally used it at 4 different beaches all over Australia over the summer break. It definitely was a great addition to the holiday planning 🏖️

Over this wet and wild weather weekend, Dee Why SLSC has been hosting an awesome group of 36 youth Lifesavers (13yrs-17yrs) from Clubs on the Mid-North Coast of NSW who have been visiting Sydney on a 3 night Camp to develop their skills and to visit a range of facilities to learn about the different pathways and opportunities in Surf Life Saving and emergency rescue 🛟⛑️

Saturday morning our Dee Why youth joined them on a visit to the impressive Surf Life Saving Sydney Offshore Rescue Boat at Malabar ("SR30") and then viewed the high-tech Randwick Council Lifeguards control-centre at Maroubra. All of the youth then joined Patrols along the Northern Beaches for the afternoon 🌊⛈️

Lots of fun, and some great skills and friendships gained for our future life saving champions. A huge thanks to the Clubs on the Mid-North Coast for coming to stay in Dee Why! 😁👏

First Aid Fridays – Drowning
This week we refresh our knowledge about arguably the most pertinent potential scenario while on patrol, signs and symptoms and treatment for drowning. Remember immersion in any fluid requires medical attention as serious complications may arise up to 72 hours after the event. See the attached file for more information.
