First Aid Friday - Identifying stroke
How do you know if someone is having a stroke? Think… F.A.S.T.
The Stroke Foundation recommends the F.A.S.T. test as an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke. Using the F.A.S.T. test involves asking these simple questions:
• Face Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
• Arms Can they lift both arms?
• Speech Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
• Time Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away.

First Aid Friday – Administration of an “Epipen”
Last week we reviewed the recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis. This week we review the technique for delivering an “Epipen” or an “Anapen”. Epipens and Anapens contain adrenaline (epinephrine) which counteracts the symptoms of severe allergic reaction. The attached ASCIA first aid anaphylaxis plan contains information about both.

First Aid Friday – anaphylaxis
This week we refresh our knowledge about the recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis. Remember there is a box containing asthma/anaphylaxis treatment including an ‘Epipen’ on the shelf in the first aid room. To familiarise yourself with the contents volunteer check the box next time you are on patrol. If more than 1 Epipen is required use an expired Epipens (we keep them in one of the upright cupboards); they will still work in an emergency. See attached file.

First Aid Friday - treatment for asthma
This week we refresh our knowledge about the recognition and treatment of asthma. Wheezing is a classic sign of asthma i.e., high pitched whistling sound during breathing. Remember: all first aid kits contain a Ventolin (salbutamol) inhaler and spacer. Also there is a box containing asthma/anaphylaxis treatment on the shelves in the first aid room. See attached file.

First Aid Friday – the Zoll automatic defibrillator
We have four Zoll AEDs – 2 in the first aid room, 1 on the patrol trailer and 1 on the ATV.
Refamiliarise yourself with the device before you need to use it.
The functions are described in the brochure: https://www.zoll.com/en-au/products/emergency-care/aeds/zoll-aed-3-bls
Watch a video of a basic run through here: https://responseforlife.org.au/blogs/how-to-guides/zoll-aed-3-run-through (8 minutes)
The full manual can be downloaded here: https://www.zoll.com/-/media/product-materials/product-manuals/aed3/12-eu-en/9650-003750-12-sf_a.ashx

The ZOLL AED 3 BLS defibrillator helps rescuers deliver high-quality CPR to adult and paediatric victims of sudden cardiac arrest. As one of the industry’s fastest AEDs, it delivers shocks quickly after chest compressions stop – increasing a victim’s likelihood of survival.

First Aid Friday - Treatment for severe bleeding (use of an arterial tourniquet)
An arterial tourniquet is used in the setting of severe bleeding from a limb which cannot be controlled with direct pressure. Severe bleeding should be controlled before proceeding to the airway, breathing and circulation.
There are 2 arterial tourniquets in each first aid kit and the “Major Haemorrhage” kit in the first aid room (spares are in the cupboard by the door). Patrol checks include the first aid kits and “Major Haemorrhage” kit. This ensures the equipment is available but also that everyone is familiar with the location and contents should there be an emergency.
