April is Falls Awareness Month, a reminder of the importance of staying safe, steady, and independent at every age. Falls are one of the leading causes of injury, but many can be prevented with simple changes to daily habits and environment. Staying active, maintaining strength and balance, and being mindful of risk factors all play a key role in reducing the likelihood of falls.
Practical ways to help prevent falls include:
- Balance & Strength Training: Incorporate exercises that improve balance and strength, such as yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, and simple exercises like heel-to-toe walking, chair squats, and wall push-ups.
- Stay Active: Aim for regular physical activity, even if it’s just a short walk each day
- Improve Lighting: Ensure all areas, especially hallways, stairs, and bathrooms, are well-lit with bright, non-glare lighting.
- Clear Clutter: Remove clutter, tripping hazards, and loose rugs from walkways and high-traffic areas.
- Install Grab Bars: Install grab bars in bathrooms, near toilets, and along staircases for added support.
- Secure Rugs and Carpets: Secure rugs and carpets to prevent slipping, or consider using non-slip mats.
- Ensure Good Footwear: Wear well-fitting, comfortable shoes with good traction, especially around the home.
- Eye and Hearing Tests:
- Ensure regular eye and hearing tests, as even small changes can impact balance and increase fall risk.
- Medication Review:
- Discuss any medications with your doctor or pharmacist, as some can cause dizziness or drowsiness, increasing fall risk
