The dental industry is facing a rude awakening.

Patients have been rewired by apps like Uber and Amazon, and now they expect that same level of seamless experience from their dental practice.

Clinical excellence used to be your competitive advantage.

Now it's just assumed, the bare minimum entry price to play the game.

What's your practice doing to create an experience that matches their new expectations?

Success isn't about the outcomes.

It's about knowing you gave it everything you had.

That you didn't hold back, that you didn't leave potential untapped.

Give yourself no option other than to build the practice of your dreams, whatever that means for you.

I sat down with Matt Formston and he shared his story of growing up legally blind, which taught him the secret of outperforming everyone around him.

He had to do the extra work because average wasn't an option. When he played footy and ice hockey, he knew he'd be slower and make more errors than the other kids.

That mindset changed everything in his business and relationships too.

Most practices burn cash on ads while their back door is wide open.

They're pouring money into Google and Facebook ads to find new patients while existing ones walk out unnoticed.

The reality is you can't scale what you can't predict.

Focus on keeping the patients you already have before running ads.

Patient retention isn't about fancy technology or perfect teeth. It's about trust that compound over time.

The practices that master this understand something that most miss: patients judge everything, not just your clinical skills.

How you show up, how you treat your team, how you handle problems.

How are you building consistent trust with your patients?

24/03/2026

Running ads with no results? Google and Facebook will happily take as much money as you'll give them and won't refund anything.

If you want to scale, you need confidence in your patient flow. Retention matters so fix this before wasting money on external marketing.

Join the Practice Max Mastermind Community to learn how to build predictable patient flow and scale with confidence.

The most dangerous competitors aren't the ones trying to do everything.

They're the ones who've found their one thing and made it unstoppable.

Shane Warne proved this in cricket, mastering leg spin while others chased athletic perfection.

What's the one system that could change your whole game if you actually mastered it?

As interest rates rise, many practice owners are going to blame the economy for fewer patients and tighter margins. And I get it. It feels like something outside your control. But the practices thriving right now didn't get lucky. They built better recall systems. Stronger teams. Tighter case acceptance. While everyone else was coasting through the good times, they were fixing the cracks. What happens in your practice isn’t random. It’s driven by what you allow and measure. Because the true strength of a practice isn’t growth in good times, but how well it performs when things slow down.

Are you running your practice by drilling and filling by day and trying to run the business by night?

At some point you hit the plateau, because you've only got two hands and 24 hours.

If you want to break through that ceiling, you need to shift gears. That means taking time away from the chair and investing in growing your associates.

Stop grinding 24/7. Build the team that gives you your time back.

Shane Warne looked nothing like an elite athlete, yet he intimidated the world's best batsmen.

His secret wasn't trying to be the strongest or fastest player on the field.

While others practiced 20 different skills, Warne focused on mastering just one thing: leg-spin bowling.

He turned that single skill into a weapon so sharp it changed the entire game.

The biggest barrier to growing your practice isn't your competition or the market.

It's your willingness to admit what's not working.

Most practice owners get stuck defending their current approach instead of examining it.

They're so busy protecting their ego that they miss the obvious improvements sitting right in front of them.

The practices that breakthrough have owners that say "I was wrong about that" and take accountability.

You can't hold people to a standard you don't hold yourself to.

Early in my leadership journey, I wanted loyalty, accountability, a growth mindset from my team. I was convinced I just needed to find the right people.

Then I looked in the mirror and realised I wasn't bringing any of it myself. Inconsistent, distracted, saying one thing on Monday and doing another by Friday.

So I stopped pointing outward and started building inward. I got honest about the gaps and worked on my consistency, my follow-through, my presence.

Want loyalty? Give it first. Want accountability? Own yours first. Want people who show up? Show up first.

The standard isn't a speech. It's how you follow through.
