Fact: Expressive language is any form of communicating your wants, needs, thoughts & opinions. This includes speaking, writing, facial expression and gestures, typing, sending text messages/emails, or using communication boards/cards and electronic devices.
“People with communication disability often are restricted from realising their right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas because of their difficulty communicating. Communication disabilities impact all aspects of life (education, employment, socialising, etc.).
Speech pathologists play a crucial role in enabling people with communication disability to realise their communication rights.” (Speech Pathology Australia)

Welcome to day 2 of Speech Pathology week.
Fact: “Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is any type of communication strategy for people with a range of conditions who have significant difficulties speaking”. (Speech Pathology Australia)
“A lot of people wonder if using AAC will stop someone from talking or will slow down language development. This is not true—research shows that AAC can actually help with these concerns! People who use AAC can also learn how to read and write.” (American Speech & Hearing Association)

In recognition of World Diabetes Day on 14th November 2021 we bring attention to the main theme of the campaign for 2021-2023, “Access to Diabetes Care.” The initiative created by the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1991 is to raise awareness and education about the condition on a global scale.

According to the World Health Organisation about 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, in Australia the figure is thought to be up to 1.8 million people.

At Access Telehealth we offer a wide range of telehealth specialist services including diabetic care such as Endocrinologists and Renal Physicians. Today we focus on a worldwide initiative aimed at increasing awareness and education about Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease and the most common form of Dementia. Due to the progressive nature of the condition people can experience worsening of memory and debilitating impairment of cognitive functioning over time.

The prevalence of the condition is primarily associated with people 85 years and older, with up to 3 in every 10 people having Alzheimer’s. However it is known that the disease can also develop as early-onset in a small number of people due to a genetic component.

Although Alzheimer’s is not the only cause of impaired memory, this World Alzheimer’s Day we are highlighting the importance of speaking with your health practitioner if you or a loved one is experiencing difficulty or changes with memory, thinking or behaviour.

Access Telehealth offers a wide variety of specialty areas including Neurology, Psychiatry and Geriatrics and our Specialists are available for bulk billed appointments if you are residing in a rural/regional location. All we require is a referral letter from your GP to arrange an appointment. To find out more please visit accesstelehealth.com.au.
