In the coming weeks, classrooms reopen for the 2026 school year. I hope all the NT youngsters have had a fabulous break.
A hearing loss can impact a child's experience at school in many ways - from concentration to confidence.
So if you have concerns, or just a niggling feeling - follow it up, rule it out, and get their hearing checked!

UPDATE 24.11.25: Thankfully we have come through Fina intact, just re-shuffled and a bit messy for Monday. Everything should be reset and running as normal tomorrow. Thanks to everyone involved in the post-cyclone clean-up, it has been a real team effort!

Like most of us, I can't get across town in a safe manner, to assess what damage has occurred at the clinic. For now, I'll touch base with everyone who has an appointment booked for Monday and Tuesday, and reassess as the day unfolds.

At this time of year, ear canals are warm, dark, moist places - three adjectives fungal species love. It doesn't take long for 'Tropical Ear' to take hold.

Otomycosis - the medical term for a fungal infection of the outer ear canal. Not the name of a cocktail you'll find at Sweethearts (well, not yet 😆)!

“Patience and perseverance are the angler’s secret tools.”

It is important for parents to understand that some days the results just don’t come. When working with children it is important to approach the session with effective engagement, time, patience, and flexibility. Even when using this approach, coupled with your best intentions, some kids just do not want to tango. It is then that we lean on true play, creativity, and imagination to build collaboration and trust. It may not be today, but we will get there!

This morning the clinic is closed as we tackle our professional obligation of 'continual professional development' (CPD). The topic of tinnitus is our focus, and we venture across international boarders to collaborate and broaden our knowledge. Looking forward to sharing what we learn. In today’s play audiometry session, we drew “a dinosaur, with shark teeth, as BIG as the BIGGEST crocodile, called T-Rex, and it’s got spots on its face” … we also found out D* had good hearing. Happy Friday everyone!
