Living in Fight / Flight is not the only way nervous system dys-regulation shows up.. sometimes it’s disassociation, disconnection, isolation & freeze .. sometimes it’s physical illness or disease ..
Your nervous systems job is to constantly scan your environment asking one question:
am I safe… or do I need to protect myself?
And if stress has been hanging around for a while (which, let’s be honest, for a lot of us - it often has), your body can get a bit… stuck in its ‘response mode’;
Stuck in go-go-go / anxious / wired / hyper vigilance
or
stuck in flat / exhausted / can’t be bothered / freeze
Or
Stuck in physical pain / inflammation / disease state
Even if your mind intellectually understands you’re not in danger - your body can still react & doesn’t know if the perceived threat is real OR imagined OR remembered- IT REACTS THE SAME
These stress adaptation patterns were initially built to protect you - Not to ruin your life, but to keep you ‘safe’
The good news is, your system isn’t ‘broken’ - With the right support & retraining — breath, safe connection, movement, time in nature, slowing the f& down & resting more (!!) etc — your body can start to relearn what it feels like to actually be regulated… & SAFE ❤️🩹
And that changes everything.
